Brian Matthew Carman, 32, passed away on December 30, 2012. He was born November 17, 1980 in Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from Blue Valley Northwest High School and Johnson County Community College, and was a senior at KU-Edwards. Brian proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines and the Kansas National Guard. During his service, he was deployed to Kosovo, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Brian was a Master Mason in the Lawrence Masonic Lodge #6 A.F. & A.M. in Lawrence, KS. He was an Eagle Scout and Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say at H. Rowe Bartle Scout Reservation.
He is survived by his parents, Susan and Gerald Carman, his brother, William Carman; and aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout the country.
Brian was articulate and intelligent, with a quick sense of humor and strong leadership skills. As many friends and family members will attest, Brian thoroughly enjoyed a good debate. He had a wide range of interests, and he was able to convincingly support his positions. Brian's talent for computers surfaced in his middle school years and remained a passion throughout his life. He was dedicated to physical fitness and enjoyed playing KU rugby. He was a faithful Kansas City Chiefs fan.
Brian will be remembered for his strong sense of honor and loyalty. He expected much of himself and others. He is loved by family, friends, and those with whom he served. He will be deeply missed.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, January 7, 2013. The graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 10 AM at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd, Leavenworth, KS 66048. “There are many people in the military with whom I have shared my life and will never forget…….The closet relationship of all though, was a guy by the name of Carmen. We met because he was friends with one of my roommates. They had worked at the same compound. He turned into my boxing coach and then, eventually my tutor. We both took classes, and even though we both had other military goals, we would yell at the other person for considering doing anything other than finish their degree first. Carmen was the only person I ever really had meaningful conversations with. We could talk about education and politics. He taught me about the stock market and I managed to crack his nose one day in the ring (probably only because he had already gotten it cracked in a fight a few weeks earlier, but I still like to take credit for it). He reminded me that I could anything; and that all I had to do was try.”
-The above is an excerpt from “To Serve My Country”, a book that could not have been written and published, without the help of Brain's encouragement.

Brian was the first person I met upon joining Boy Scout Troop 324, Oxford Middle School. He was fun to be around, both in scouting and at BVNW. From one Eagle Scout to another, you are missed, Brian.

Words cannot describe the kind of teammate Brian was on the rugby field. We all called him "Sarge," and he certainly had that presence about him that demanded respect and hard work from all of us on the team. But he was also so energetic and easy going, and a blast to be around. To all of the members of his family and friends, the Kansas Jayhawks Rugby Football Club sends its sincere condolences, thoughts, and prayers with you at this time.

There are no words to define friendship. It is only found in the actions of one towards another. I would put him in the category of defender of weak, helper to those in need and a seeker of knowledge. Our country will lay to rest one of its finest I have known. Brian, thank you for your help when I had troubles. You shared your home and family and I am forever greatfull.

The last time we saw Brian was Christmas night, we watched "Aliens" (which both the guys thought was the perfect Xmas movie) and had a great time-as we always did hanging out with Brian & Lindsey. Even though at first Justin wanted to not like the guy dating his little sister, it was impossible not to like Brian. We thought we'd have many more times to get together and never imagined that night would be the last time we'd see him. He made Lindsey so very happy. Our condolences to Brian's parents, brother, family and friends, we'll miss him very much and our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

It was heart wrenching to hear the news of his passing. I too service with Brian (SPC Carman) at home and on deployment. About 8 year ago Brian was a key player/joker in my bachelor party at the restaurant he managed in Manhattan. A lot of fun and laughs! Brian you will be missed greatly and we 'Band-of-Brothers' will meet on the other side at "Fiddlers Green" before we ride!!! My heart goes out the family!
