Bruce D. Carbrey, of Raleigh, 68, loving husband, father, and "Grandpa" passed away Tuesday, May 7th, 2014, after battling kidney cancer.

Bruce was born January 24, 1946 in Summit, NJ. During his youth, Bruce was an enthusiastic Boy Scout. He graduated from Madison High School in 1964, and then enrolled in the ROTC at Bucknell University where he received his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1969. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army and served in Vietnam from 1969-1970; he received two Army Commendation Medals, one with Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Bronze Star.

Bruce worked for the Army Research and Development Command at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, NJ for ten years. In 1980, Bruce earned his MS in Computer Science from NJIT and relocated to NC where he began a lengthy career as a software engineer. He retired in December 2013 after working at SAS Institute in Cary for eleven years as a Senior Programmer.

Bruce especially loved spending time at the NC Crystal Coast, where he was an active community member. Some of his favorite pastimes included bicycling, playing with his APA pool team, sailing and kayaking. Bruce took great pride in supporting the Kayak for the Warriors (K4W) in Pine Knoll Shores, NC, an annual event to benefit Hope for the Warriors. His contributions included racing his kayak, earning significant donations, and working behind the scenes to build and maintain the K4W website.

Above all else, Bruce treasured his family, and they know of no greater gift than his sure, steadfast love. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Sally-May, of Raleigh; three daughters, Katie Sawicki (Todd) and grandchildren, Gwendolyn and Matthew of Seattle, Washington; Evalyn Carbrey (Fernando) of Berkeley, California; and Betsy Castellow (James) and grandson, Brighton of Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to hopeforthewarriors.org.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, May 18 at 2:30pm at Asbury United Methodist Church in Raleigh, with a reception to follow at the family's home in Raleigh.
