Bruce Charlsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 8, 2013.

I left this world on January 6, 2013. I was born in Penn Yan, NY, in 1943, and the son of Henry K. and Eva M. Charlsen. Both are deceased but I hope to see them again. There is nothing interesting in what I did for employment, but I was in the U.S. Air Force from 1963-1969 (a Vietman Veteran) and worked for UNIVAC, Penn Yan Express and Yorktowne Caskets. Every place I worked closed up and left town. Now I will do the same.

I have 4 children, Todd and Diana (Pinti) Charlsen of Clinton, Tamara Mugford of Oriskany, Michael Charlsen of Utica and Michelle Charlsen (deceased). I also have 5 beautiful grandchildren, Alexandra of Clinton and Coty, Kirsten and Tehgan of Oriskany and Alison Charlsen (deceased). I love them and will miss them all dearly.

I leave behind 3 sisters, Edna Reiners and Marilyn Oswald of Penn Yan and Colleen Wight of Rochester. My sister, Betty Vermilye, left this world before me. I have 2 brother-in-laws, Dwayne Oswald and David Wight and many neices and nephews. Patricia Rogowski is a very close and personal friend and I thank her for helping me through some difficult times.

I treasure the many memories and experiences I had with my family and my biggest regret is that I did not spend more time with them. There is so much more I should have done and wanted to do. I wanted to hold my first great-grandchild.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend Memorial Calling hours for Bruce from 11:00AM to noon on Saturday January 12, 2013 , with a service to follow at Townsend –Wood Funeral Home, Penn Yan, New York. Any donations, please make them to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society, Utica, NY, or to Hospice. They do fantastic and difficult work.

Now I will finally be going home to Penn Yan....to stay.

My goodness I can't believe it has been so long since Bruce left us. I will always remember how he had a chance to enjoy his grandchildren

To Edna, Colleen, Betty and Bruce`s kids and grandkids,
We share your sorrow and memories even if Howard and I are 3000 miles away. Bruce has been very much in our prayers and thoughts through his long struggle and pain. I am glad that he is no longer suffering.Prostate cancer is a terrible thing. We have many that we know personally who have it right now. I have shared Bruce`s story with them as it went along...to keep them aware that they need to be alert even if "clear" of it for several years.
Bruce Emailed me after his birthday that he felt better and thought maybe he`d make it to birthday 70 like I will in February. I`m glad he had better days where he was more positive. He was so happy to be able to be with his kids and grandkids. He loved them all very much!!I wish they could have known the Bruce my brother Dave and I remember...the joking and fun at the farm and family get togethers. Egg fights, rides in his old coupe , sardines and all the normal orneriness we cousins got up to. :)He will be greatly missed... a much loved first cousin!!

Our sincere condolences to Tammy, Mike, Todd, Edna, Marilyn, and Colleen. Bruce was more like an older brother to me than a first cousin, since neither of us grew up with a brother, just wonderful sisters. He had a huge influence on many parts of my life - - ‘inadvertently' (?) initiating my lifelong interest in hot rods and racing with his '37 Ford coupe (like the one shown); my serving in the Air Force like him, instead of the Army when I got my draft notice; and my summer weeks on the farm, learning to drive tractors and the truck, which later gave me purpose on our mini Texas ranch during retirement. And I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to thank him. In the last few years, we reconnected and I grew to appreciate him anew, with his email jokes and lasting sense of humor. My wife, Peggy, grew to love him also and regrets not having a chance to meet him. He will be missed and remembered forever. Maybe the Good Lord will even find a way in Heaven of making him enjoy the dreaded task of “milking”, as long as he is by the side of his beloved dad and my uncle, Henry! See you later bc. Keep the gas can handy and the tires fresh!

Todd,Tammy, and Mike,
Your Dad was an incredible man who loved you and your children unconditionally. I would call Uncle Bruce whenever I was home and we kept in touch on facebook. I will miss his emails, messages, and pop ups of "Hello" when I am online. I have many fond memories of your Dad and he will forever be in my heart. Sending love and prayers to all of you, Renee

If there can be such a thing at such a sad time, I will say what a beautiful obituary was written for Bruce. I will ask if he wrote this himself knowing he would be leaving us or did his family write so nicely of him. My sympathy to his loving family.
