Buris Avise Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 9, 2012.

Buris Ortis Avise, 97, of Des Moines, died on Friday, September 7, 2012 at Ramsey Village. The son of (Levi) Fred and Louise (Moser) Avise, Buris was born on June 28, 1915 in Des Moines. Buris graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1934 and was one of the fastest sprinters in the state. He served in the Army Air Corps in the Africa and Italy theaters during World War II and married Rosemary Lowther on May 19, 1945 at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines. He resided at 3801 Grand for the last 9 years.
Buris was a natural salesman who worked as a hardware consultant until his retirement. He was proud of attaining the designation of AHC (Architectural Hardware Consultant.) He had a great smile, a welcoming laugh, loved people and never complained. Buris had a gift for friendship and loved helping people. He had volunteered thousands of hours at Mercy Hospital. Above all, Buris loved his family dearly.
Buris is survived by his children, Michael (Mary Ellen) Avise of Ames, Anne Avise of Windsor Heights and Mary Avise of Des Moines; 3 grandchildren, Brian, Shawn and Nick; and 8 great-grandchildren, Allyson, Morgan, Jerilyn, Brock, Angie, Tanner, Kiyla and Bryce. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Rosemary, and an infant daughter, Theresa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Augustin Catholic Church on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 10 am. Burial with military honors at Glendale Cemetery will follow. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to Mass.
The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the charity of donor's choice. On-line tributes may be left at www.McLarensResthavenChapel.com.

I am sad to read of Buris's death. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed having your parents as my neighbors. They were a blessing to me when I needed it most, and didn't even know it.
Thoughts and prayers to you.

God saw Carl getting tired. So He put His arms around him and whispered "Come to Me.". Although you loved him dearly, you could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. I remember Carl as a good neighbor for a number of years. Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thoughts and prayers. My sincerest sympathy goes to his wife, his children and their families. Thoughts & Prayers.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I met your parents through the Mercy Wellness Center. What a wonderful couple! Your Mom came to exercise class but met your father through class dinners and get togethers. We still talk about the "good ole days" with them around.

Anne, Mary, Mike and Mary Ellen,
I am lucky enough to have known your Dad since Anne and I were Sophomores at SJA. I enjoyed riding with the family to Mike's "away games", the summer vacation we spent together up at Clear Lake, taking inventory at Iowa Paint, but mostly always feeling like family whenever I was over at 35th Street (due to Buris and Rosemary). I continued to feel welcome whenever I was in Des Moines when he had moved to Grand. His smiles and jokes will be missed.
