It is with profound sadness that the family of Petty Officer 2nd Class Burton Wayne Enos Wentzell, age 53, of Halifax, announces his passing on October 19, 2016, in the QEII Victoria General Hospital with his loving wife, Cindy and devoted sister-in-law, Tracy by his side.
Burton proudly served his country by joining the Canadian Forces in 1984. During his career he was posted at the Canadian Forces Saint John, Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Iroquois, Canadian Forces Base Baden-Soellinge, CFS Mill Cove, 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, Task Force Bosnia Herzogovina Infantry Battle Group, HMCS Ojibwa, HMCS Onondaga, Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Chicoutimi and Canadian Forces Base Halifax. Burton was awarded the NATO Former Yugoslavia Medal, Canadian Forces Decoration 1st Clasp and Special Service Medal.
Burton travelled the world during his career and wanted to share the travel bug with his number one priority in life, his wife Cindy. They enjoyed many trips together and loved taking their yearly trip down south where Burton enjoyed wearing his flashy Hawaiian shirts and relaxing in a lounge chair while sipping his favourite beverages. Burton was an honest, kind, compassionate person who could annoy you one minute and make you laugh the next.
Burton fought his cancer head on and surrounded himself with only positive family and friends. He remained positive and optimistic to the bitter end by focusing on the future and not the past. He never gave up hope and provided comfort to others who were also receiving chemotherapy treatments. His family extends a huge thank you to all the nurses on the 11th Floor at the Dickson Centre who provided top notch health care during his two rounds of chemotherapy and also to Dr. Mark Walsh and Dr. Nathan Lamond at the QE II who never sugared-coated his diagnosis and always remained positive and kept Burton's best interest in mind. Also thank you to Dr. Swift at CFB Halifax who Burton often spoke fondly of and considered him not only his doctor but friend.
Burton will be lovingly remembered by his wife Cindy, parents-in-law Helen and Clark Jollymore, Northwest Cove; sister-in-law Tracy, Halifax; and brother-in-law Clark (Shawn), Halifax. He also leaves behind his children Liam and Molly, United Kingdom.
Born in Liverpool NS he was the son of the late Roxena and Enos Wentzell. He leaves behind his sisters and brothers: Roxena MacEachern (Leo Nasager), Liverpool; Frederick (Sharon), Kentville; Jean, Port Williams; Alice Nowe (Robbie), Milton; Belinda Delong, Beach Meadows; Myria Thistle (Clay), Milton; Enos (Carla), Caledonia; Marilyn Anthony (Stephen), Liverpool; Louann Alexander (Michael), Bridgewater; and Sherry Leroy (Kevin), Halifax, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brothers Ray and Steven and sister Wendy.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre Foundation.
A funeral service will take place at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Tuesday, October 25 at 10:00 am, followed by a reception and committal to take place at The Milton Baptist Cemetery at 1:30 pm. Online condolences can be made by visiting: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
