Clinton Robert (C.R.) Walters, Jr. entered into eternal rest on July 23, 2013. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 27, at 4:30pm at Saint John's United Methodist Church, 2140 Allandale Road, Austin, Texas, with the Reverends Paul Escamilla and Ralph Underwood officiating.
C.R. was born in Tulia, Texas to Clinton and Ruba Walters on September 23, 1923. Upon graduating from Waco High School, he entered Texas A&M College as a proud member of the Class of 1945. While at A&M, he was a Singing Cadet. After Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for the U. S. Army, and during training in New Jersey, he met Eleanor Rieger. C.R. served in the military from 1942 to 1946 (with the 102 Ozark Division while in Europe), earning three Bronze Stars and a battlefield commission. After the war, C.R. and Eleanor became engaged, and they were married on June 8, 1947. C.R. completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M in 1949, and was a lifetime member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. From 1949 to 1986, both in Waco and Austin, C.R. worked his way up from draftsman to President, Chairman, and part owner of Alamo Steel & Machine Co. C.R. was a 32nd degree Mason, and was very active in the community, serving in leadership positions with the Northwest Little League, the Boy Scouts Capital Area Council (from which he received the Order of the Arrow award), and Saint John's United Methodist Church. The St. John's Friendship Class, including teacher Tom Griffy, was always a source of strength and friendship.
C.R. was a very loving husband to Eleanor and an exceptional father to his three sons. In his early years as a father, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his three boys; and in his later years as a grandfather, spending time with family. He was very friendly and "never met a stranger." C.R. was always looking for ways to help others. He embraced these words of his favorite Tennessee Ernie Ford song, If I Can Help Somebody: "If I can help somebody as I travel along…my living shall not be in vain." He will be missed by many who were privileged to know him and call him a friend.
C.R. was preceded in death by his parents and by his two brothers, Andy and Fred. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 66 years, Eleanor; his son Bob and daughter-in-law Marjie of Austin; his son Fred and daughter-in-law Joy of Waco; his son Tom and daughter-in-law Elizabeth of Austin; and his sister-in-law, Peggy Walters of Richmond, Virginia. He also leaves behind his six grandchildren: Bolton Walters and his wife, Dana; Erin Walters Coker and her husband, Shane; Melissa Walters Hawk and her husband, Matt; Clint Walters and his wife, Laura; Caroline Walters; Catherine Walters; as well as four great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, the Texas A&M Singing Cadets, or a charity near and dear to giver's heart. The family wishes to thank the 2nd floor Assisted Living and the 3rd floor Skilled Nursing Center at the Querencia, and Texas Home Health for their kind and professional care of C.R. and his extended family.
