Charles Dow Grimes, Jr., age 68 of Mt. Olive, AL passed away on Monday, March 3rd, 2014. Charles was a graduate of Phillips High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Jacksonville State University. He later received his Master of Arts in Education from UAB. Charles served in the Army National Guard of Alabama for 6 years. He was a licensed Real Estate Appraiser (SRA) and had served twice as President of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers in Birmingham. He also served as president of the Gardendale Lions' Club and was a faithful member of East Gardendale Baptist Church. Charles had a lifelong passion for music and a lifelong passion for fishing. He is dearly loved by his family and hosts of many friends, and his grandchildren were always the light of his life. He quietly did God's work helping others all along the way.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles D. Grimes, Sr. and survived by his mother, Catherine T. Grimes. Charles is also survived by his wife, Mary T. Grimes; a son, Charles Todd Grimes and his wife Jamie; three daughters, Catherine Grimes, Julie Grimes Smith and her husband Brian, and Jenny Grimes Hamil and her husband Ryan; a brother, Stephen Grimes and his wife Carol; two sisters, Shirley Juban and husband Lynn, and Gigi Scott and her husband Walker; his wonderful grandchildren, Charles Hudson Smith, Charles Fisher Grimes, William Porter Smith, Isla Catherine Hamil, and Lawson Louis Grimes.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 6th at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel at 3 PM with a visitation for friends beginning at 1:30 PM. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Gardendale. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to East Gardendale Baptist Church Building Fund.

My dad, Jimmy (Dick) Goodwin still speaks of Charles often. Charles death really impacted him because Dad thought of him as such a good friend. I hope you are doing ok and I pray for you often. God bless you.

Very sorry for you loss. I have known Charles since the early 80,s through the appraisal industry. Charles was a fine man and respected by many.
He and I worked together on many of the committees with the Society of Real Estate Appraisers where I learned to appreciate his work ethic.
