Obituary

Calvin Joseph Aucoin, 91, was born on September 6, 1922 and went to meet his Savior on January 25, 2014. He was born into the family of Avie and Lucille Fontenot Aucoin in Mamou, Evangeline Parish, Louisiana. His father was a rice and cotton farmer who moved his family to Mamou and had a grocery store. Calvin had seven brothers, Elson, Duffy, Saris, Wellance, Avie Jr., Charlemagne and Joel (who died in infancy). At 19 Calvin became part of the "Greatest Generation" when he joined the Merchant Marines which became the United States Navy of WW II. He proudly defended his country as an Aviation Machinist's Mate, Second Class V-6 USNR....
Calvin Joseph Aucoin, 91, was born on September 6, 1922 and went to meet his Savior on January 25, 2014. He was born into the family of Avie and Lucille Fontenot Aucoin in Mamou, Evangeline Parish, Louisiana. His father was a rice and cotton farmer who moved his family to Mamou and had a grocery store. Calvin had seven brothers, Elson, Duffy, Saris, Wellance, Avie Jr., Charlemagne and Joel (who died in infancy). At 19 Calvin became part of the "Greatest Generation" when he joined the Merchant Marines which became the United States Navy of WW II. He proudly defended his country as an Aviation Machinist's Mate, Second Class V-6 USNR. He served in the European theatre and was stationed in Bermuda and England. He not only maintained the B24s, but flew in them and was part of the support of the Normandy Invasion. When Calvin entered the service, he was given a Gideon New Testament which he read from cover to cover. This instilled Word led to his entrance into the ministry proclaiming Jesus Christ. Calvin and Hazel were married shortly after he returned from World War II on June 4, 1945. The next year, their family grew with the birth of their first daughter, Suarez. They used his Veteran benefits to move to Minneapolis, MN where he enrolled in Minnesota Bible College. His second daughter, Debra Joy came as a graduation gift in July of 1954. His first ministry was in a small church in Douglas, WY where he supported his family by working in a uranium mine while Hazel contributed by sewing ornate cowboy shirts. Later, Sarah Lucille came along to complete the family in 1958. Calvin served in the ministry additionally in Indiana, Iowa, Oklahoma and Louisiana and taught in the public school system. Even in his later years, he served his Creator and Redeemer in spreading the message of salvation including a mission trip to Haiti at age 75. Even after the death of his beloved wife Hazel, Calvin continued to be a blessing and encouragement to the staff at Landmark of Baton Rouge. Calvin was loved and will be missed by many for unselfish service and outreach. Calvin is survived by his daughters, Pamelia Suarez Schlaf and her husband Thomas, and Sarah Lucille Wilde and her husband Jim; his grandchildren, Joshua Davis and wife Beth, Ryan Davis and his wife Amanda, Jerry L. Denton III (Trey), Jessica Dillard and husband Mark, Allison Tankersley and husband Andrew; his great grandchildren, Joy Davis, Austin, Alyssa, Alexis and Andrew McCloskey, Rhys and Gauge Tankersley; and sister-in-law, Terry Guillory. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Avie and Lucille Aucoin; his wife of 68 years, Hazel Aucoin; his daughter, Debra Joy Davis; and his brothers, Elson, Duffy, Saris, Wellance, Avie Jr, Charlemange and Joel. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home Tuesday, January 28, 2014 beginning at 10:00 am until the Funeral Service at 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Josh Davis, Trey Denton, Ryan Davis, Jerry Denton, Jeff Wilde and Danny Carleton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Calvin's name to the New Student Fund at Crossroads College (formerly Minnesota Bible College), 920 Mayowood Road SW, Rochester, MN 55902.
