Carder was born to Mildred B. & Carder H. Manning, Sr. on February 22, 1931, and grew up in Northeast Kansas City. He began piano lessons at age seven and at age ten began singing in the Boys' Choir at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, at the request of Mabelle Glenn. Mabelle was the Choir Director at the church and Director of Music in the Kansas City school system, when she heard Carder sing at Gladstone Elementary School. This began his love for and desire to teach music. He taught at William Chrisman High School (1956-1958), Southeast High School (1958-1960), Southwest High School (1960-1969), and Penn Valley Community College from 1969 until his retirement in 1995. At Penn Valley, he was Professor of the Music Department, Chair of the Fine and Communicative Arts Division, the Humanities Division, and also served on various college and district committees. He continued teaching part-time at Penn Valley until 2005.
Carder graduated from Northeast High School in 1948. He earned an AA from the Kansas City Junior College in 1950, a BA in Music from the University of Kansas City in 1953, and an MA in Music from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1963. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict for two years.
Carder was a member of the Missouri Educator's National Conference (MENC), the Missouri Retired Teachers' Association (MRTA), and was initiated into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the national men's music fraternity. He was a lifetime member of the Belton Historical Society, the Kansas City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, American Legion Post #488, Belton, and a lifetime member of the UMKC Alumni Association.
Carder directed the Declarations of Independence Choir, the Foxwood Springs Choir and was the first Director of the Southland Community Chorale that he and his wife helped organize in Belton. He directed church choirs for fifty-eight years at Overland Park Christian Church, Country Club United Methodist Church, Old Mission United Methodist Church, Avondale United Methodist Church, Hillcrest Christian Church, Crossroads United Methodist Church of Belton and was a member and Altar Choir Director at the Belton Christian Church when he retired from church music in 2008. In 2014, after moving to the Carnegie Village Retirement Community in Belton, Carder and his wife organized the Carnegie Village Singers.
Carder is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Marty; sister, Donnetta Lowry of Houston; nephew, William Lowry (Beverly) and children: Creed, Case, and Kemper of Dallas; stepson, Lyle Fleetwood (Tima) of Belton; stepdaughter, Linda Fleetwood of Overland Park; two great granddaughters, Stacey Harris (Michael) of Belton and Lisa Morris of Olathe; three great grandchildren, Dylan, Hailey and Taylor and four great-great grandsons. I was in Mr. Manning's concert choir at Southwest, in 1965-66. I was so lucky. He was mesmerizing, humorous, kind and passionate about the beautiful music that he taught us to sing. One of the first things I did after graduating and enrolling at MU was to bravely audition for Mizzou Singers, which was a very small and select group. I didn't make the choir and realized afterwards that it was just as well, because it wouldn't have been the same without Mr. Manning. For the first time I realized that there are some experiences in life that you will never have again. He was a gifted teacher, a wonderful man and so sell-effacing that I don't remember ever hearing him sing!

I just found this obituary in an internet search and am not sure if it will reach Carders family so long after his crossing. Carder was the choir director at Southwest High when I was a student (1964-68) and was one of the most influential teachers in my life. (I went on to achieve degrees up to the academic doctorate and served as provost of a university, so I have known a lot of educators.) Please know that there are many Southwest High graduates who loved and appreciated Carder. He was a gift to our young lives and influenced our growth as we pursued our unique paths. Thank you, Carder. I picture you singing in the Etheric.

Mr. Manning was a serious but jolly fellow. He had such a quick wit, and he walked fast too. He was my Music Appreciation instructor at Penn Valley in 1977. I learned so much and never forgot his fascination with 'Gregorian Chants'. A lovely man. May sweet memories strengthen his wife and family. I will not forget him.

Fond memories from WCHS girls choir. Shirley Kepley Crick

I was at Southwest HS during the time that Mr. Manning was vocal music teacher...however I was in the instrumental music department (under George Alter). But all of the students at SW were enriched by Mr. Manning's presence, his dedication and most of all the beautiful music he coaxed from my classmates! I am sure he already has organized the angels into a new choir and they are making beautiful music.

A dedicated teacher and, later thru our lives, corresponding friend; latest, a wonderful, personal Christmas card last December. He was a special person - admired and respected by countless he touched. My sincerest condolences to his wife, Marty, and his family. I would be at his services but must take care of our 2 yr. young grandson while our daughter gives birth to a younger brother the day before. Had new baby's name not been preselected ("Oakleigh"), In his honor, I would have asked "Carder" to be considered.

Carder was the man who taught me how to love music and teaching. I will miss him, but will think of him always as my mentor and friend.

Few words are adequate to describe my relationship with and affection for my high school choir director, Carder Manning. He was a teacher, a vocal coach, a mentor, and a friend. Carder was my "Mr. Holland" at Southwest High School from 1967-1969. I thought I'd left him there when I graduated, but we followed each other to the brand new Longview Community College that fall. I shall always be grateful for the personal interest he showed in each of his music students, myself included. Carder helped to make my high school experience enjoyable, a feat that few educators are able to claim. Though gone now from my sight, I shall always remember the personal attention he showed me during those very formative years in my life. Rest In Peace, dear friend.
