Mr. Carl Edwin "Bud" Monk Jr. passed away peacefully July 16, 2014.

Bud was born April 4, 1920 in Nacogdoches to Carl Edwin Monk Sr. and Louise Garrison Monk. He was raised and lived almost his entire life in Nacogdoches. He attended the 5th World Scout Jamboree in 1937 in The Netherlands where he was awarded his Eagle Scout rank by Lord Baden Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts. His fascination with the flowers that he saw on this trip inspired his later choice in his business life.

After graduating from Nacogdoches High School Bud worked at Cason, Monk & Co. while attending SFA State College. He graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. With his sister, Corinne, he established the Carl Monk Jr. and Corinne Monk Jones Merit Scholarship Fund in Mathematics at SFA for undergraduate mathematics majors.

He served in the U.S. Army from June 1943 until June 1946. Because of his degree in mathematics, he was initially assigned to serve as a radio teletype mechanic for the Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater. He was eventually transferred to the Quartermaster's Corps.
After the war Bud became a successful independent businessman. He dabbled in a variety of businesses before starting and operating a retail floral business, "The Flower Shop" and a wholesale floral supply company that distributed floral supplies and plants throughout Central East Texas. With his father, Carl Sr. and other local business people he was a founder of Nacogdoches Savings & Loan Association.

Bud's years in the florist business are fondly remembered by his nephews who spent summertime in Nacogdoches and loved nothing more than to hop in the "flower" truck and go on a run around East Texas with their uncle, delivering plants and floral supplies.
He was a stock car racing fan and his nephews also remember, with much nostalgia, accompanying their uncle to many quarter mile-dirt track ovals deep in the Piney Woods.

Bud spent his later years in Magnolia Court assisted living. His family members extend their thanks to the caregivers there and to his close friend Rudy Millard for their kindness in caring for him. He will be missed by his family and the people of Nacogdoches.

He is survived by nephews, Frederick E. Jones, Thomas M. Jones, and Robert P. Jones; niece, Martha V. Jones; and cousin, Elizabeth M. Milstead. He had one sister, Corinne Monk Jones, who predeceased him in 2011.

Graveside services are set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Sunset Memorial Park, located at 5127 North St. in Nacogdoches.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at Cason Monk-Metcalf, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches.

Donations can be made to the Carl Monk Jr. and Corinne Monk Jones Merit Scholarship Fund in Mathematics at Stephen F. Austin State University; or to a charitable organization of your choice.

Arrangements under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches, Texas. Online memories and condolences may be offered at www.CasonMonk-Metcalf.com.
