Carl Gray Prendergast, 86 passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, June 16, 2017 surrounded by family. Born in Pulaski County, VA on July 11, 1930, Carl grew up in the Lamberts Point area of Norfolk, VA. A graduate of Maury High School and Old Dominion College, he exemplified how hard work and a commitment to excellence can take one from humble beginnings to a successful career in business.
After his military service in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Carl was employed at the Norfolk-Western Railroad, was an executive manager with Smith-Douglas Fertilizer Co., Borden Chemical Co. and was a Vice-President of the Royster Fertilizer Company. He later served as President of Marine Port Terminals in Brunswick, GA before his entrepreneurial spirit led him to run several small businesses in the Saint Simons Island, GA and Fernandina, FL area.
He loved boating and fishing. He spent countless hours on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and dearly loved his fishing trips to Hatteras and Ocracoke Island.
In retirement, he and his wife Frances enjoyed living on Saint Simons Island and St. Marys, GA as well as St. Augustine, FL. They returned to Virginia Beach in 2002 to be closer to family. Carl was predeceased by his father, George Prendergast, mother Irene Prendergast and sister Margaret Humeniuk. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Frances Pollard Prendergast, sons Bill (Sheryl) and Mike (Mary) all of Virginia Beach, as well as grandchildren Lindsay Mead, Carley Prendergast, Brittany Warrick (Jake), Delton Gay (Samantha) and great-grandchildren Aiden, Micayla and Lorelei along with several nieces, nephews, their spouses and children.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers at Home Instead Senior Care and especially the staff of the Terrace at Beth Sholom Village for their compassionate care.
A graveside service will be held at Rosewood Memorial Park, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 11:00 AM.

Just so hard to pick the words. Carl Was so funny and warm. I can still see frank and I sitting in the back porch listening to the many stories of when you and Francis met. The service and boat stories. We would crack up. And Frances would giggle.. The birthday balloons and Holiday adult beverages over all the years. We were just this weekend talking about the old Webber grill ya gave us over 10 years ago to take to our camp is hanging in. (Not gunna talk about this weekends flair up while Frank cooking).....I say burnt.....You would have cracked up over that one our friend. It was so hard moving away last year from all our friends. You will be greatly missed. ;We love you. See you in Heaven. Love Frank and Cindy

My beloved grandfather... So blessed to have known a man with such radiating positivity and humor. I feel truly blessed to have been named after you and with that I will be reminded of you throughout my life each day. You always made me feel so special and I am so proud to be your granddaughter. I plan on continuing to make you proud when I start school at JMU. Our inside joke of reciting the "gold is gold" commercial will always make me smile. Thank you for all of the smiles, laughs, and memories. I love you Grandpa Carl. Forever my hero!

Frances, it's been many, many years since I lived across the street from you in Chesopeian Colony, but I was saddened to read of Carl's passing. You were wonderful neighbors. I send my sincerest sympathy to you, your boys and their families.
