Carl Sgamboti Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 21, 2016.

CARMEN (CARL) SGAMBOTI
April 21, 1940 to February 21, 2016

Carmen (Carl) T. Sgamboti, Age: 75, husband of Maria Perez Sgamboti since 1963, from Simsbury, formerly from Wethersfield and Enfield, passed away on February 21, 2016 after his ten year courageous battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

Carl was born in 1940 in New Britain, Connecticut. He graduated and attended New Britain High School, the University of Hartford and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Carl was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and United Technologies Research Center. Among many other notable achievements in his career, he was granted a patent. Carl retired in 1998. In his retirement, he was devoted to the New England Air Museum, spending nine years as restoration leader of a WWII A-26 Bomber.

He was a devoted husband and father who cherished time spent with family. He had a loving and gentle nature with a dry sense of humor. He was a long time member of the Spanish American Culture Club. He will be most remembered for his passion for World War II history, world politics and problem solving. He excelled at everything he did, including taking first place at the Senior Games Olympics in the shotput event.

In addition to his wife, he is survived and will be dearly missed by his daughter, Lisa Sgamboti and son-in-law Greg Batton, his son Carl Sgamboti and daughter in-law Gaye Sgamboti. He loved his six grandchildren: Casey Sgamboti, Alina Grimshaw, Drew Batton, Chase Grimshaw, Mia Sgamboti and Lauren Batton, his sisters Adrienne Fitzgerald and Donna Atkins, and his brother Eddie Juchniewicz

Carl's family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Hartford Hospital staff, especially the ICU staff, for their wonderful care and extend a very special thank you to Dr. Matthew Carley and Dr. Mohanakrishin Menon for their long term, expert care and friendship.

Visitation hours will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016 from 5-8pm at the New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave, New Britain.

A committal service will be held Thursday, Feb. 25th at 10:30am, graveside in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Family and friends are invited to meet at the funeral home at 10am to process together. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:30am at the Universalist Church, 433 Fern St. West Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the New England Air Museum.

On this third anniversary of Carl's passing we will offer a toast to his remarkable life and generous nature. His contributions to the 416th Bomb Group, and especially to the NEAM and the 416th Archive, were just a few of the many areas where Carl made a lasting impact. We should all have such a wonderful legacy. Carl and Maria will live on together in our hearts for the rest of our days.

Carl,
We feel like you were a blood brother to us. The 416th Bomb Group has acknowledged just two Honorary Members in the past 70 years and sharing that distinction with you was one of the highlights of my life. I am absolutely sure that it was of yours as well. Your loss is beyond measure and is overshadowed only by the measure of your contributions to every endeavor you undertookmost certainly including that of being a devoted husband and father. The 416th Family will long remember and tell tales of Carl Sgamboti in their gatherings and reminiscences. Rest in Peace dear friend.

We were so sad to hear about Carl today. We will always remember him as a good man with a beautiful smile. I felt a specialness with him because of our cancers, and how easy we were able to talk to each other about our feelings...and fears. Our world will miss the goodness and smile of Carl.
