Carl Howard Vognild passed away at his Beaverton, OR home on July 14, 2014, at age 75.

He was born March 17, 1939 in Everett, WA to Clarence and Ramona (Brown) Vognild, and moved to Oregon when he was very young. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Portland State in Applied Mathematics, where he was a member of the TEKE fraternity. From 1962 to 1968, he served honorably in the US Navy and Reserves during Vietnam. Upon returning to Portland, he met Joke Tentoea through mutual work friends in 1969, and in 1970 they were married at 1st Methodist Church in Beaverton.

Mr. Vognild worked as a computer programmer and analyst at the Esco Corporation foundry, for Baker Rock at their quarry, and finally for Schnitzer Steel at their rolling steel plant. His last job, which he very much enjoyed, was pumping gas at the Safeway in Murrayhill.

He was a member of Beaverton Rotary Club, and volunteered annually at the Beer Garden at the Beaverton Good Neighbor Days Festival. He loved making model airplanes to fly at Delta Park, and building little sailboats for his children. Carl also loved to cross-country ski and rock climb, particularly at Rooster Rock, Horse Thief Butte, and Mt. Hood. He was a member of the Mazama Climbing Club.

As a Boy Scout leader, he was the one the Scouts would want to drive back from the coast with, as he would always stop for burgers on the way home. He was also a youth soccer and baseball coach (usually his son's teams), and liked camping and fishing. Carl's Father was a home brewing enthusiast, and Carl loved being around the process and enjoying the results.

In 1980, Carl, Joke, Hans, Peter and Monique (niece) traveled to Holland (Joke's ancestral home), and spent a couple of weeks reuniting with her family before renting a Volkswagen and driving to Germany. In Holland, he would walk every day to watch the boat and bridge builders, finding it relaxing and peaceful. In the ensuing years, many of Joke's family came to visit Carl and Joke in Oregon.

Mr. Vognild is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joke Vognild of Beaverton;
two sons, Hans Vognild of Welches, OR and Peter Vognild of Beaverton;
a granddaughter, Inanna Moon of Welches, OR;
his sister Elma Christine of Portland;
and by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will take place at Central Lutheran Church, 1820 NE 21st Avenue in Portland at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 6. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for a donation in Carl's name to a charity of choice.
