HILBERT CARLA ANN HILBERT Loving wife of MG Donald C. Hilbert USA (Retired) passed peacefully away on August 17, 2014. Carla was born in Bay City, Michigan and attended Kalamazoo College. She was a beautiful lady and was recognized as Miss Bay City in the statewide beauty competition. She was an advocate for woman and children and worked as a social worker in Saginaw, Michigan. She was a member of the Junior League of Saginaw Valley, the Garden Club and the Visiting Nurses Association (Saginaw) until she moved to the DC area. HILBERT CARLA ANN HILBERT Loving wife of MG Donald C. Hilbert USA (Retired) passed peacefully away on August 17, 2014. Carla was born in Bay City, Michigan and attended Kalamazoo College. She was a beautiful lady and was recognized as Miss Bay City in the statewide beauty competition. She was an advocate for woman and children and worked as a social worker in Saginaw, Michigan. She was a member of the Junior League of Saginaw Valley, the Garden Club and the Visiting Nurses Association (Saginaw) until she moved to the DC area. In Washington, she worked for United States Senate Office of the Sergeant at Arms escorting the President and other heads of state and official guests of the Senate. She continued her membership in the Junior League of Washington and the Daughter's of the American Revolution (DAR). While her husband served as the Director of The Soldiers & Airman's Home, Carla was an Arlington Lady for the Soldier's & Airman's Cemetery, and hosted a number of receptions for the residents and staff at Quarters One. Carla participated in the National Trust's renovation of Anderson House, Abraham Lincoln's summer quarters. She was first lady of Knollwood and offered her assistance in many activities including the development of the Special Care Unit when her husband served as the director of Knollwood, The Army Distaff Foundation. Carla is survived by her adoring husband, Donald; her children, Christopher (Dianne) Lechner; Jennifer (Phil) Gieger and Martha (Walter) Spak. Her stepchildren Donald C. Hilbert, Suzanne (Joe) Neurauter; Marianne (Paul) Smith, Kathy (James) Cowan, and James (Agnes) Hilbert. She also leaves siblings Nan (Neil) O'Leary, Bill Schweinsberg, and Jill Rafferty, and was "Mimi" to 13 wonderful grandchildren. Carla had many friends who have expressed their appreciation for knowing her through her varied interests, gracious style and sense of humor. She was loved dearly by all and will be sadly missed. Carla's family will receive friends at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA on Thursday, August 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Memorial Chapel, Fort Myer, VA at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
