Carol Ann Darline Litchfield (nee Ross) passed from this life on April 3, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Donald and Melba Ross of Cincinnati, Ohio and the widow of the late Dr. Charles Carter Litchfield. She is survived by her cousins David Ross; Dennis Ross; Linda Ross; Paul Ross; Pam Skoczen; Ronnie Ross; Kent Ross; Kris Jackson; Renee Hendrickson (deceased); Randy Ross; Nancy Trexler; and Bill Faust. Carol Ann Darline Litchfield (nee Ross) passed from this life on April 3, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Donald and Melba Ross of Cincinnati, Ohio and the widow of the late Dr. Charles Carter Litchfield. She is survived by her cousins David Ross; Dennis Ross; Linda Ross; Paul Ross; Pam Skoczen; Ronnie Ross; Kent Ross; Kris Jackson; Renee Hendrickson (deceased); Randy Ross; Nancy Trexler; and Bill Faust.

Professor Litchfield graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1960 with an M.S. in Biochemistry. She graduated from Texas A&M University in 1969 with a PhD in Organic Biochemistry. She also worked at Texas A&M for several years as a research scientist. She served on the faculty of Rutgers University from 1970 to 1980 in the Dept of Microbiology. From 1980 to 1990 she worked for DuPont Company in several positions including Senior Environmental Scientist. Beginning in 1993 she joined the George Mason University faculty as Associate Professor in their Dept. of Biology and later in the Dept. of Environmental Science & Policy. From 2005 to the present, she was Research Professor for that Department

Throughout her long career Professor Litchfield served on many professional and government panels
and committees including, from 1985 to 1989, the New Jersey Governor's Panel on Coastal Waters and
in 1989 on the Environmental Biotechnology Working Group of the U.S. Dept. of Energy and the
Technical Advisory Committee of the UCLA Engineering Center.

She was a member of numerous professional societies and served as President of the Society for
Industrial Microbiology (SIM) from 2007 to 2008. That organization presented her in 2012 with their
Charles Porter Award for her achievements in applied microbiology and her exceptional service
and dedication to SIM. Professor Litchfield will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held on May 27, 2012 at 3:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, 4444 Arlington Boulevard. Officiating will be Rev. Michael McGee and Rev. Randy Ross.
