Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2014.

Carole Moses Harman passed away on November 11, 2014. She was a gentle and loving woman who loved beautiful things. She is survived by her loving partner and friend for many years, Debbie DeCarlo.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in, Manchester Ct., she was the daughter of the late Mae (Schneider) and Nathan Moses.

Carole came to Providence to attend and graduate from R.I.S.D with a BA in 1965 and earned an MA from RISD in 1969. In 2003, Carole was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Pedagogy from RIC.

She taught Art in the City of Providence for 33 years at Hope High and Central High Schools. After retiring from the public schools, Carole began teaching, mentoring and supervising future art teachers.

In 1993, Carol was the recipient of the A. Milken Award and was cited as the RI Art Teacher of the Year.

Carole was an artist and longtime member of the Providence Art Club. She was a painter, pencil drawer and weaver. She loved all things that were creative and had numerous art exhibits over the years.

She was a gourmet cook and traveler, liked to spend time exploring, eating and entertaining with good friends.

Over the years Carole served on many committees and boards; The RISD Alumni President, RISD Board of Trustees, Founder of the Citywide Arts, New Urban Arts, and RI Art Teachers Association to name a few.

Burial and services were private. Contributions may be made in Carole’s name to New Urban Arts, 705 Westminster Street, Providence, RI or simply do an act of kindness for someone less fortunate than you.

My deepest condolences to Ms. Harmon's family. I am a former art student from Central High School (1982). Carole was so much more than an art teacher to me and my brother David. She was our friend and mentor. She truly touched our lives in a genuine and positive way. She was an extrodinary woman, whom I respected immensely. My heart is saddened to hear of her passing. She will be missed by many students who's life she touched.
Thank you Carloe for truly caring for us. <3

Somehow my first message disappeared, leaving only my name displayed.
Carole will always be magical, mystical, magnificent, magnanimous and memorable! As passionate and enormously talented educators, Carole and Deb shone! Carole's light will never be diminished. Plus, she taught me how to like cooked spinach for the first time, and I must have been about 50 then! It was done simply but I failed to make it as good as Carole's. Deb, Carole, Bianca and I shared a wonderful day by the sea, and I'll always think of laughter and light and love when remembering Carole. Deb. My thoughts are with you.

My condolences. I know that she will be greatly missed. Ms. Harman was an excellent teacher. She was my weaving teacher we formed the lunch bunch. It was Ms. Harman and several of us students back in 1989. She will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace

Ms. Carole Harman, was and will always be my mentor. She talked me out of being a statistic or being part of the status quo. She told me to Shine and not to be afraid to be myself or to be judged. She is the reason I was the only one to graduate from college in my family, foster in me the spirit to give back in my community and help others to reach their life long dreams. I teach Art and have my Art Education degree because she helped me, I miss her dearly. With the stroke of my paint brush you and I will be together how we use to be my loving friend! The world just lost an earth angel. See you in paradise.

Carole was and will remain an important mentor in my life and I know in the lives of many. She was gently ruthless and taught me when your heart sings for the right thing sometimes its better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission. She was a warrior with grace, held high standards and loved deeply. I'm sorry its been so long since I checked in...really sad to know she has passed and yet know her guidance remains and lives out in so many left behind. Beautiful Carole. All the best to you Deb DeCarlo!

A wise, great artist I once knew told me that it is a law of physics that energy may dissipate through the universe but never die. Firmly believing this, I am addressing some of this message to Carole.
Carole! You made my life easier by being a kindred spirit to my husband, Jeff, at Central High. You lit up his dark days, as you did for so many colleagues, friends, and students.
You gave me the gift of loving cooked spinach for the first time ever in my then 50 plus years when you and Deb had us for dinner. Although a simple rendition, as much as I tried to duplicate it, yours was the best! You had a great talent for so many things!
A day that is seared into my memory is one summer day when you, Deb, Bianca, and I shared great friendship, conversation, food and drinks on the dock at the Back Eddy in Westport!
Deb. You and Carole shared a passion for so many things, not the least of which was a total dedication to the students of Providence. Brilliant educators, both.
Carole was so gifted, and shared her gifts readily with everyone who she embraced. Carole! Thank you so much for being such a buoyant, beautiful, and brilliant friend to so many whose lives you touched.
Deb! Know you've had a tough few years that you transcended with grace and love.
Blessings to you both! Xo

My deepest heart felt condolences Deb. Carole was a teacher's teacher and who I highly valued and appreciated knowing as a colleague for many years. She lit up the lives of all of us who were fortunate to know her, as well as being the brightest, giving of self, and the warmest of individuals. Her students and those around her, particularly at Central, were left with indelible beautiful artistic brush marks of compassion, concern, and respect, for all of those she touched! I was truly fortunate to have worked with her and her positive outlook.

Deb, I know how difficult a time this for you. But the fact that Carole was able to share with you the love and adoration she possessed will enable you to endure. I can never forget how she took my wife under her wings and made Marie comfortable when she started at Central H.S. Carole was a great teacher, but more importantly, a great and loving person who touched so many lives. Our prayers are with her always.

Little did I know that the last time I saw the both of you would be the last time I was ever to see Carole. Before we left for Florida, I found out from Mikeala at Tockwotton, that Carole had moved in awhile ago and was planning on calling you ( on our return, 11/24), to see if it was OK to visit. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and Carole. The two of you loved each other for such a long time and enjoyed life to the fullest (until this disease affected her so dramatically). All if us who were touched by her brilliance, energy, humor and true friendship will always carry those memories in our hearts.
She was a treasure!!!!

This wonderful woman had a profound effect on my life. She was my art and art history teacher at Hope High school in eleventh and twelfth grade. I do not know where I would be if not for her. She went beyond what any teacher would do for a student. Because of her untiring efforts I was awarded a full scholarship to RISD after graduation. I still can picture her at my graduation in her striped dress. I saw her from time to time and let her know what I was doing, getting a BFA and an MAE from RISD,teaching there for twenty years and becoming a Providence Public schools art educator (19 years)where I now teach at Hope originally in her old room. I am a practicing professional artist as she was. She saw something in me. I saw her at her show for the last time at the Providence Art Club. I told her that I loved her and her last words to me were "I love you too." This loving and caring person will always be in my heart. She made me the artist and teacher I am now. My prayer is for her to finally be at peace.
