Carole Remick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2011.

Mrs. Carole C. (Bocasky) Remick, age 78, of Marblehead, died peacefully the morning of Tuesday Oct. 18 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late E. Bruce Remick.

Born in Peabody, Carole was the daughter of the late Dominic M. and Stella (Sobolewski) Bocasky. She attended Peabody schools and was a graduate of St. John's High School in Peabody. She received her A.B from Regis College and later obtained her Master's Degree from Boston College. She also obtained 30 credits of post-graduate work at Harvard University. She had been a resident of Marblehead since 1970.

After graduating from Regis College, she joined the Regis Lay Apostolate as a volunteer teacher and taught at the Cristo Rey School in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Carole taught high school English in Lake George, NY and at Peabody High School. She went on to be an English Professor at UMass Boston. During her time at UMass Boston, she ran the school's co-op education program. She also secured grant funding from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and launched the High School Journalism Collaborative, which introduced many teenagers of color to the journalism careers they would later pursue. Carole retired in 1997 but continued to run the Collaborative. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of her program.

Carole was President of the Regis College Alumni Association and had a special fondness for the college and its mission. She was also a member of the Polish Business & Professional Women's Club and the Faculty Club at Boston State College.

Carole had a love of people and life that was infectious. She had a sparkle of excitement whenever she talked about a new book, a motivated student, a museum exhibit or a Boston sports team. She has traveled to many places with friends experiencing life and learning about different cultures. She kept in touch with her students over the years and had a special bond with many, spending holidays with them and even traveled to India for a special students wedding. In the winter she enjoyed Scottsdale, AZ, and the summer she spent time in Marblehead and Rockland, ME.

She leaves a brother-in-law, Wilson Remick and his wife Virginia. She also leaves her nieces and nephews, David Remick and his wife Robin, and Judy and Mike Remick-Henry of Upstate, NY. She was the sister-in-law of the late Robert Remick. Carole leaves countless life long friends who thought of her as family. She was a god mother to several children and was known as a second mother to many others. She will be sorely missed but her sparkle will live on in all of us. She was "terrific".

A Memorial Mass for Carol will be celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave. MARBLEHEAD on Saturday, November 5, at 11AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Burial will follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Regis College Development Office, 235 Wellesley St., Weston, MA, 02493-1571, as well as the Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923. Arrangements entrusted to the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, Marblehead.

My dearest mentor. You taught me to teach by your example, by your endless encouragement, and by your extraordinary enthusiasm for life and learning. Your impact on me when I was your student at Boston State instilled a love of teaching in me that is just as strong now four decades later.
For forty years, my answer to the question "which teacher made the greatest impact on your life" has been and always will be Carole Remick.
I will miss you profoundly, but I am so proud to be a part of your legacy. Your spirit lives on in me and in my students who also got the opportunity to call you their Mentor.
I would say "rest in the peace" you so deserve, but I am inclined to think you are already "negotiating" more blessings for thousands of budding teachers and young journalists past, present and future. In Heaven and on earth who could ever say no to that smile, wit and passion!
Thank you for your endless devotion to me, my students and all the young people whose lives were changed by the doors you opened for them.
With deepest gratitude and love, Marguerite Picillo-Gonsalves and the Malden High School staff of The Blue and Gold.

Carole's passing makes you think twice about what you can leave behind, and reminds you to get to work. She has been an ally and a model for me for decades. That isn't about to stop.

Dean & Christi Stover

The Stover Family in Richmond VA expresses our deepest sympathy in the passing of Carole. So many "terrific" times were spent with her over the past 40+ years. Each year Carole would travel to Richmond and spend time with Essie and Dean Stover in Richmond and at their river condo in Urbanna looking out over the Rappahanock River in eastern VA. Carole couldn't wait to eat freshly picked Hanover Virginia grown tomatoes and fresh VA crabmeat. Other years Essie and Dean would travel to either Marblehead or Rockland for summer visits and to eat fresh "lobstas" and steamers. Essie and Dean's children and grandchildren visited Carole too. Dean III, his wife Christi and their children Kari and Dean IV loved to visit Carole in MA & ME. We loved Carole so much and are all Red Sox fans because of her, some of us are Patriot fans too. Carole touched our lives with her "terrific" personality, we will always remember and carry her in our hearts forever, one of our most favorite family members, Carole Remick. We love you forever and may God be with you.

Aunty Bo was a life-long friend of my mothers and was always so kind to me. I cherish the time we spent with her in Mah-blehead in 1988 and again in 2009. On our most recent trip, she took us to the Institute for Contemporary Art, the Kennedy Library, hosted a neighborhood dinner, and made sure everything was perfect for us. She was indeed a TERRIFIC woman!

I was nine years old when I first met Auntie Bo..Her husband had studied with my father at Brown University and when my family and I moved to America from Ireland, we eventually met...I always kept contact, even when my father passed away and my brother and I went to live with our mother in The Netherlands...I'd always send letters letting her know what I was up to and sent her packages with Dutch delicacies and other things...
When my mother passed away nine years ago, this month as a matter of fact, I cherished the contact even more and always marvelled at her adventures...She did have plans to come here and see me, but she was ever the globetrotter..She always spoiled me by sending packages with all kinds of goodies, baked by herself or store bought and other cute things...The last few months I was worried because she didn't respond anymore to my emails..I called but to no avail....She kept it from me a while that she had been ill.....This evening on my birthday I called her and left another message...Then I decided to look her up on internet and got the shock...I can't believe she's gone! Her spirit goes on!!!
love,
Cathy

Carole was instrumental in my choice of a career in journalism. Carole encouraged me at every turn and was one of the most influential teachers in my college and law school career. We were all the beneficiaries of her kindness and genuine concerns - the greatest attributes of a teacher. May Carole rest in peace secure in the knowledge of a life well lived and her outreach and impact on so many of us, her students. Dan Rea, WBZ Boston

Carole was a wonderful colleague for more than thirty years. Her commitment to students was deep and she had an acute eye for talent. She once referred a student to me who soon did all of the writing in our Title III program and became my administrative assistant. After retirement I would see Carole at Symphony Hall and UMass functions, where she was unfailingly upbeat. What a lovely human being! She certainly will be missed.

My time at Regis College was a turning point in my life; I'll never forget the day when I received the letter of acceptance and started crying on the spot. The week changed my entire perspective of life. This program helped me open my eyes to a new realm of possibilities. I wouldn’t have made it this far without your dedication to Regis. I won’t forget the time when all of us were giddily planning the 25th edition of the paper. You will always be in my heart for your gentle kindness and giving charisma. Thank you, Ms. Remick, for changing my life and others’ lives through this program. We miss you. Rest in peace.

One of the Highlights of my summer this year was during the week at Regis College, during NEHSJC 2011. There I spent time with good friends, new and old, met some new, unforgettable and amazing people, got a taste of the field I love: Journalism, created great memories and learned a lot along the way. One of the amazing people I met that week was the woman who made it all Possible, Ms. Carole Remick. Although I have only known her for a short time, I can say she was one of the most cute and caring people out there. I appreciate all she has done for not only myself, but everyone whose lives she has touched. Thank You Ms. Remick for everything. Rest in Peace. ♥

Mrs. Remick is one the most giving people I have ever met. She gave us all confidence in ourselves not just as writers but in every other aspect. She believed in all her students and was willing to hand opportunities to everybody. In just the guestbook, everyone will be able to see the diversity of people who Mrs. Remick has influenced. I wouldn't have realized half my potential without you! Thank you for everything!

Carole was a strong woman I both admired and respected. She took me in and provided a path for me to achieve and I am forever in debt to her. Her impact is widespread and will continue through the kids in her program, which I am so proud to have been a part of. I will miss her dearly and keep her in my prayers.
