Carolyn M. Bandera, 72, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Wilson Memorial Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, William Bandera, Sr.; son, Paul T. Bandera; parents, Irving and Virginia Hogeboom; sister, Vivian Stevens. She is survived by her son, William J. Bandera, Jr., Marcellus, NY; 5 grandchildren, Jordan, Alexandra, Corrine, Ashley and Emma; former daughter-in-law, Loretta J. Bandera; sister, Betty Jane, Windsor, NY. Carolyn was the Unit President of the American Legion Post 80 as well as having many other offices and committee responsibilities; American legion Auxiliary Broome County President, 1997-1998; American Legion 6th District Chaplain; Partner in 8/40, Salon 37; Empire Girls State House Mother; Passionate Volunteer for decades for American Legion, Auxiliary, S.A.L., Oxford Veteran's Home, Bath V.A. Gift Shop; Ceramics Teacher at First Ward Citizen Center and former Greenman Center. It is perhaps with little debate that Carolyn, along with her husband, Bill, built their most rewarding and long lasting legacy through what has affectionately been called The Bandera Free Christmas Dinner. In 1989, Carolyn and Bill began an outreach effort by providing a free Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day. On that wonderful day, 68 people gathered to share a hot, homemade meal, and most of all, not to be alone. Thanks to their perseverance, the effort of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of the American Legion Post 80, the tradition has continued and over 4000 meals were served just this past Christmas.
Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the James V. DeMarco & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson, NY with Pastor Chris Scarinzi officiating. Burial will follow in Chenango Valley Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the DeMarco & Son Funeral home Tuesday from 4 – 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in Carolyn's memory to the Bandera Family Free Christmas Dinner, 216 Avondale Ct, Vestal, NY 13850. www.ofaca.org.
