Carolyn Thurmond Van Winkle was born November 30, 1931 in Athens, GA. She was married to the love of her life, Edward Van Winkle Jr. for over 60 years. She was the daughter of the late Warren and Minnie Thurmond and sister of the late David Thurmond. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother, Warren Thurmond, and sisters-in law, Peggy Thurmond and Eileen Thurmond. She graduated from Athens High School and the University of Georgia where her friends affectionately called her Squeaky. She moved to Atlanta in 1953 where her three children were born; Edward Van Winkle III, married to Cherie Smith Van Winkle, Jennie Van Winkle Curtis, married to Mark Curtis, and Elizabeth Van Winkle Hornbuckle, married to Shane Hornbuckle. She is the grandmother of Mark Curtis IV, married to Lindley Sharp Curtis, Courtney Van Winkle McEver, married to Taylor McEver, Carolyn Curtis, Edward Van Winkle IV, Brent Hornbuckle, John Hornbuckle, and Sarah Hornbuckle. She is the great grandmother of Claire Curtis.
An enthusiastic camper at Camp Chattooga, she proved to be an excellent marksman with the rifle and the bow. While at the University of Georgia, Carolyn was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, the synchronized swim team, and the archery team. She was also the sweetheart of Lambda Chi Alpha and named Miss Modern Venus. She adored traveling to the beach, collecting seashells, watching the ocean and remembering the first time she met her husband while on spring break in Florida. Later Carolyn became the Opera Chairman of the Atlanta Junior League, a member of the Piedmont Garden Club, and President of the Women of the Church at North Avenue Presbyterian Church. Carolyn had a great appreciation and passion for art and antiques and not only enjoyed painting but also inspired numerous students by her afternoon art lessons, some of whom are still painting today. She and her husband enjoyed many parties and dances at the Nine O'Clock's, and with their lifelong friends they celebrated New Year's Eve with costumes and revelry.
Most importantly, Carolyn will be remembered for her deep personal faith in the transformative, healing power of Christ. She, along with her husband, Ed, welcomed countless people to their home for Bible studies and prayer. They taught Sunday school at North Avenue and were frequently called upon as speakers at conferences throughout the southeast. Her childlike faith and trust in God will be her most abiding legacy to family and friends. A memorial service will be held in celebration of Carolyn's life at 11:00 o'clock on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at North Avenue Presbyterian Church located at 607 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30308. Dr. Scott Weimer will preside. The family will receive friends at Carolyn's home on Monday, the 21st from 5 until 7 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to North Avenue Presbyterian Church, 607 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30308 or to Visiting Nurse Health System 5775 Glenridge Drive, Suite E200, Atlanta, Georgia 30328.
