Carril "Poochie" J. Cooks Jr., 46, a native of New Orleans and a resident of Houma passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 in Morgan City, Louisiana.
Carril is survived by his loving daughter, Janessa Cooks of San Francisco, CA.; his loving son, Caleb Cooks of Fort Walton, FL.; his daughters, Courtney and Hailey Verret of Houma, LA., two brothers, Romal Cooks of Bentonville, AR. and Harold Cooks of San Diego, CA.; his sister, Angla Mosely of Patterson, LA; his paternal grandmother, Mabel Stepter of New Orleans, LA; his first wife, Doris Cooks of San Jose, CA; his second wife, Dawn Verret-Cooks of Houma, LA.; a very close cousin, Brian Washington; one nephew, one niece, a host of cousins, extended family, law enforcement family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Carril J. Cooks Sr.; his mother, Mary Lee Meade Cooks; his maternal grandfather, Adam Meade; his maternal grandmother, Leola Meade; and his paternal grandfather, Paul Cooks.
Carril was a God fearing man. He was generous, outgoing, kindhearted, and adventurous. Most importantly, Carril was one who helped others, taking pleasure in giving aid when needed. Never was he seen with a frown on his face but rather with a bright smile, as that was his nature.
In 1986, Carril joined the United States Armed Forces, where he proudly served for eight years. While in the Army he obtained the Rank of Sergeant First Class and served in Operation Desert Storm. While serving, Carril received The Purple Heart for valor shown in battle for injuries sustained while saving another solder's life; a fact which his family is exceedingly proud off.
Growing up, Carril had a dream of becoming a law enforcement officer, a dream which came true when he joined the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office and later the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office. Carril began his career at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office as a road deputy in 2007. He moved into the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division in 2009. In addition to his position as a narcotics detective, Carril also served as a member of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office Special Response Team and worked as a training instructor in the academy. His dedication to service and the security of our community will continue on through those he worked with and taught.
Though loyally serving his community with the Sheriff's Office, Carril also socialized with numerous groups in the parish. A Masonic member since the late 80's, he also was a boxing instructor taking time out of his schedule to mentor and work with local youth in the community. His favorite past time was riding with the Khaotic RiderZ of Morgan City, a group for which he was Road Captain.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family requests that visitation be observed Friday, July 5, 2013 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Hargrave Funeral Home in Morgan City. Visitation will resume Saturday, July 6th at the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Patterson.
A celebration of Carril's life will take place Saturday, July 6th at 11:00am at the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Patterson with military honors following in the Morgan City Cemetery.

"Hey Carril, just wanted to say that we miss you so very much, Mortie as well. I still cant believe you are gone and its already been a year since you left...." Michelle (Houma, LA)
