Catherine Cook Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2014.

Cathy was born in Houston, Texas on December 16, 1964 and passed away peacefully at her home in Conroe, Texas on July 1, 2014 after a 2 year battle with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Cathy was a member of the Conroe Art League and was involved in the re-vitalization of downtown Conroe. As part of her commitment, she opened her own art gallery, "Gallery Off The Square" downtown featuring Thomas Kinkade artwork and other local artists... Though Cathy loved to dabble in art and paint herself, her real talent was in selling it. Her commitment to the community included the sponsorship of a "Paint In" in 2010 where children painted pictures that were auctioned off to raise money to purchase phone cards for our US troops. Her gallery has also sponsored such events as Children's Pumpkin Carving Contests and has been actively involved in the "Chalk-Up Conroe" project for the last three years with proceeds benefitting "The Rose"' a breast cancer organization for women without insurance to get mammogram screenings and diagnostic services. Cathy was preceded in death by her father, J.E. Sheffield, grandparents Doris and Norbert Mai and Jim and Ana Sheffield and great-nephew Jacob Brown. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Cook, her mother, Ruby Sheffield, her siblings Becky Rowley, Lisa Court, Billy Varley, Scott Sheffield and Paula Brunner; her Aunt Dyana and Uncle James Booker and Uncle Norbert Mai. She has 4 cousins Valerie Graves, Michael Booker, Mary Ellen Mai and Emily Mai; nieces and nephews are as follows: Kelley Brown, Tony Rowley, Jennifer Bone, Billy Ray Steelman, William Varley III, Kathryn Varley and Jarod Peavy. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 6th from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Metcalf Funeral Directors in Conroe, Texas. Funeral service will be Monday, July 7, 2014 at 10:00 am in the Metcalf Chapel with Pastor David Green officiating. A reception will be held at Gallery Off The Square immediately following the service. The family ask that donations be made in lieu of flowers to "The Rose" @ www.the-rose.org or to IBC Clinic in the Nellie B. Conally Breast Center located at MD Anderson.

We got to know Cathy when we became back alley neighbors in our downtown stores.

Though, we only knew her while she was battling cancer, a fight I also had in common. We shared a kinship, those of us in the fight understand the struggles we go through without a word being expressed.

We pray that in heaven, her tears will be no more, no more pain, just joy as she waits for her family to join her.

I first met Cathy at a Thomas Kinkade art Gallery in the Woodlands. She loved the amazing artwork and we could talk about Thomas Kinkade for hours.
I was blessed to have purchased several paintings from Cathy and she always made the extra effort to have them signed and master Highlighted.
I hope she is watching Thomas Kinkade in heaven today painting another Disney Classic.
I will miss Cathy! I am better off since I got to know her.
Houston and all of Conroe will miss her deeply.
RIP Cathy!

Special prayers to Bobby and family.
In your corner,
Joe

Cathy, Cathy, Cathy.....I KNOW without a doubt that you are lighting heaven up in a way that only YOU can do! Cathy and I got to be great friends in just the past few years. In her very perceptive way, I think she realized that this north Louisiana transplant felt like a fish out of water, and she took me "under her wing" so to speak. We shared many great times just visiting at a little table in the back of the gallery, had lots of laughs, shared our blessings with each other, rejoiced over good times and commiserated over the bad times. I am so thankful for the time that I had to be your friend, girlie! Your love of life was contagious, and you lived it to the fullest. Your bravery is an inspiration to me, as well. I will miss you so much, but I fully expect you to be right there to greet me when I "graduate!" Until then........XOXOXOXO

I always admired Cathy's strength as a sales person, this is how I came to know her, we were co-workers for a time. One of her closest friends shared some of Cathy's journey with me but the one comment that her friend made that truly resonated with me was that Cathy had made a lasting impression on so many people through her faith in God. You will be missed but never forgotten.

To a fellow artist and dog lover, you'll be missed by a lot of people, including me. I wish I would have had the chance to be around you more often but we all know our lives get busy and our critters keep us from doing things we want to do. I'll miss your wonderful laugh, sense of humor, loving devotion to Bobby, and just having you around. So glad you got to be a part of the Cook family and I had the privilege of getting to know you. I'm happy you're at home and are seeing old friends and family...until we see each other again, I'll think of you and feel your presence in my heart and memories. Love and healing to cousin Bobby.

Bobby, our deepest sympathies to you and your family. I am so sad that we have lost her. Cathy was one of those very special people on earth who always had a beautiful smile to share no matter how she was feeling and a kind word for everyone. Being around her for the last several years has been a source of considerable inspiration for me and my art. I found I wanted to work harder trying to take better photographs just so I could share my best effort with your wife. She was always so supportive of me, my photography, rett syndrome, downtown and the arts. She brought something very special to the community of Conroe ,Texas and it will be missed for many years to come. I believe that our town is a better place because of her presense. I pray that she is in a wonderful place now and often looks down on us and finds joy in her heart knowing she helped make Conroe special. God bless her soul.
