Catherine Ann (Duffy) Schmit, 73 years old, died on Tuesday, July 9, at her home in Acworth, GA surrounded by loved ones. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends, and many supporters gave her strength during her battle with uterine carcinosarcoma. Cathy was born on April 26, 1940 in Milwaukee, WI to Frank Duffy and Cecilia (Braun) Duffy. After graduating from Pius XI High School in 1958 and St. Agnes School of Nursing in Fond du Lac, WI in 1961, she married Ralph E. Schmit, the love of her life. The couple were married on December 28, 1963 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Married for 49 1/2 years, Cathy and Ralph raised their 3 wonderful children, Rebecca Allison (Scott), Joe Schmit (Usha) and Kristin White (Matt) over the years in LaGrange, IL and Oklahoma City, OK. Cathy and Ralph eventually moved to Acworth, GA when Kristin attended the University of Georgia. Filled with compassion and interest in others, Cathy made friends easily and maintained contact with many. She had a real zest for life and took interest in anything and everything her children or grandchildren were interested or involved in. She frequently sent newspaper clippings, emails or gifts referencing such interests. Cathy loved visiting her children and grandchildren and she and Ralph would take a road trip at a moment's notice to attend one of their grandchildren's dance recitals, baseball games or birthday parties.
In both LaGrange and Oklahoma City, home was a gathering place where the children brought all of their friends. She loved family traditions when the kids were young like annual skiing and camping trips. Cathy and Ralph, with and without their children, spent many happy miles on the bike trails of the United States, Europe and Mexico. She loved to travel, and especially enjoyed watching the final day of the Tour de France one year in Paris. Cathy was a voracious reader and was an active member of a book club for many years. In addition, she loved to knit, garden and watch movies and sports - especially baseball and football games.
Cathy was a registered nurse in six states and always felt that "nursing prepares one for life!" After she retired from her nursing career, she spent most of her later years continuing to devote her time to others through her volunteer work, including the nine years she visited heart patients at Kennestone Hospital with Mended Hearts and worked at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop in Kennesaw, GA.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph Schmit; children, Rebecca Allison (Scott), Joe Schmit (Usha) and Kristin White (Matt); brother Michael Duffy (Carol); sister Patricia Lukach; sisters in law Grace Grabowski and Joyce O'Connor; 8 grandchildren: Katherine and Joe Allison; Jaden, Priya and Maya Schmit and Charlotte, Amelia and Emma Clare White. Cathy and Ralph were also loving foster parents to many children over the years. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law Andrew Lukach, Nestor Grabowski and John O'Connor.

A visitation at 9:30am in the chapel followed by a funeral mass at 10:30am will be held on Friday, July 19th at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church 1618 Ben King Road NW Kennesaw, GA. Online condolences at www.dignitymemorial.com/winkenhofer-pine-ridge-funeral-home/en-us/index.page. In lieu of flowers, Cathy has asked that memorial donations be made to www.standup2cancer.org.

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in many heart-felt forms from too many people to name individually, but including all the doctors, nurses, hospice workers, family and friends, including the great "Wednesday group" at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop – either through prayer, phone calls, emails, facebook posts and/or visits.

"May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow." Eg (GA)
