GREENSBORO - Cecil Miles Buchanan, 67, of Greensboro, NC, passed away on November 27, 2012.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC. Immediately following the service, a celebration of his life will be held at Café Pasta, 305 State Street, Greensboro, NC.

He was born April 15, 1945 in Danville, Virginia to the late Coy Lee Buchanan and Edith E. Buchanan. He was also preceded in death by four brothers; Paul, Jimmy, Herbert and Jud and one sister, Eris.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Buchanan; son, Nolan Buchanan, of Greensboro, NC; step-daughter, Nicole Brown of Charleston, SC; brother, Otis (Judy) Buchanan of Lexington, NC; and half-sister Norma (Norman) Myers of Danville, VA; along with many nieces and nephews.

Cecil served in the United States Army, was a Vietnam veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the Army, Cecil became a salesman for Black Cadillac in Greensboro, NC and then General Manager for Jerry Watkins Cadillac in Winston Salem, NC. Upon retirement, Cecil began a thriving business in real estate. He was a longtime member of the Greensboro Ski and Outing Club and enjoyed snow skiing, boating, volleyball, bowling and working out. Cecil was a unique man who always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. He loved his family and friends dearly and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a joy to be around because of his infectious laughter and upbeat spirit and everyone who knew him was blessed. Cecil was well respected throughout the community and an inspiration to us all.

Our gratitude and special thanks go out to the caring staff at Wesley Long Hospital and Cancer Center. We also thank our extended family and friends for their help and continuous support. Due to Cecil's love of life, we ask that in lieu of flowers you contact your local Red Cross and donate a pint of blood in his memory.

The light is gone from the window. No one can replace my good friend Cecil. The funny things he did made me laugh like a little boy. Hopefully time will replace this deep sadness with hilarious memories of the many times he took us back to the laughter of childhood. I think he would want us to laugh and celebrate his bigger than life, always positive and smiling personality. As I told him last Saturday "I will see you on the other side".

Back in the 1990's, we were on a GSOC ski trip to Utah. One day, a number of us, including Cecil, met a Alta mountain guide for a area tour. One of the off-the-beaten-path places he took us involved maneuvering carefully through a long, narrow pathway with huge snow covered rocks. Cecil was ahead of us and at one point, skiied off the path into a soft area that gave way and appeared to swallow him whole. We were the first ones to reach him. When we asked if he was alright, he looked up from 7 feet below us and said, "Yeah - This Hole Is Bigger Than Alabama!"

That single "Cecilisum" has reverberated in our minds over the years. It became the hallmark statement for us that reflected how energetic and enthusiastic Cecil attacked and lived life to the fullest.

God's greatest blessings on you, Cecil. We will meet again!

The obituary was spot-on. Cecil was a unique person always with a smile on his face. Willing to help. Infectious laughter. Upbeat, and well respected. God knows, if there is a person that will truly be missed by many people, it is Cecil. I can only aspire to emulate his way with people, and hope his influence serves in some small way a show of admiration for my friend.

My Dad was the most inimitable and altruistic individual I have ever had the pleasure to be around. There will truly never be another soul like him. His remarkable influence and encouraging spirit elevated all who knew him and transformed our lives forever. I will miss him greatly and I will always cherish the thirty-five years that we got to spend together. I love you Dad, and I will see you again when we are reunited in the afterlife.
