Obituary

Cecilia E. (Sousa) Tavares, 89, of Wareham, formerly of South Dartmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Tobey Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph Tavares. Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Antonio E. and Maria (Fernandes) Sousa, she had resided in New Bedford and South Dartmouth for most of her life before moving to Wareham 9 months ago. Mrs. Tavares had worked as a switchboard operator for Borg Warner formerly New Bedford Gear until her retirement. Cecilia E. (Sousa) Tavares, 89, of Wareham, formerly of South Dartmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Tobey Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph Tavares.

Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Antonio E. and Maria (Fernandes) Sousa, she had resided in New Bedford and South Dartmouth for most of her life before moving to Wareham 9 months ago.

Mrs. Tavares had worked as a switchboard operator for Borg Warner formerly New Bedford Gear until her retirement.

She began painting at the age of 75 and her art work is currently on display at the Southworth Library. She enjoyed ceramics, square dancing and traveled extensively with her dear companion Alfred Rebello. The trips to Portugal with her cousins were most special. Cecilia highly valued all of her friendships as well as her immediate and extended family. The highlight of her life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her family includes her daughter, Joanne M. Manley and husband Thomas of Wareham; two grandchildren, Thomas W. Manley II and wife Jean of Londonberry, NH and Amy J. Hicks and husband David of Dedham; four great-grandchildren, Thomas W. III and Stephanie M. Manley, Ryan J. and Adam J. Hicks; and her godchild, Judith Ryan and husband David of New Bedford. She was the sister of the late Antonio A. Sousa.

Her Funeral will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 9am from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a Funeral Mass at 10am in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Visiting hours Sunday 2-5pm. Burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Flowers welcome or donations in her memory may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 82 High St., Wareham, MA 02571.
