Charles B. McCants, a resident at Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, N.C. died on October 12th, 2016.
The oldest son of Dewey and Virginia McCants, he was born September 14th, 1924 and raised on a farm near Andrews, South Carolina.
Following World War 2 service in the Pacific with the Navy Seabees, he obtained an undergraduate and a Master of Science degree from North Carolina State University and a Doctorate degree from Iowa State University.
He was a member of the North Carolina State University Soil Science Department faculty for 34 years. His responsibilities included research and administration in state, national, and international programs related to soil management practices to improve crop production. He was a resident of the Philip Morris Research Award; a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy; and a fellow of the Soil Science Society of America.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lena (generally referred to as Stan). He is survived by son Bernie McCants and wife Peggy, son John McCants and wife Catherine; grandson Charlie McCants and wife Laura; great grandchildren Mary Margaret and Virginia McCants; and sisters Brenda Wildes and Allison Jenkins and brother Everett McCants.
Visitation will be at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, on October 28th, 2016, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
A memorial service will be held at Glenaire on October 29th, 2016, at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Glenaire Foundation, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary, NC 27511.
