Charles (Charlie) Hale Newsome, 77, of Jacksonville, FL passed away on November 21, 2016 in Community Hospice. He was born on December 8, 1938 in Jacksonville, FL to his late father, Leslie L. Newsome and mother, Irene James Sewell.
Survived by his wife of over 40 years, Valita (Val) Newsome; stepson, Eric C. Williamson; adopted daughter, Rosalba C. Bowditch; brother, L. Leonard Newsome; sister, Donna Lynn (Bruce) Lynam; brothers-in-law, Richard E. (Jan) Conrad and W.E. (Louise) Byers; sister-in-law, Margaret Godbold; granddaughters, Ericka (Dustin) Taylor and Madisson Bowditch; great-grandchildren, Erick, Alec, Abby and Kelena Taylor; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
After graduation from Robert E. Lee High School in 1956, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Kiddie Program where he served as a Fire Control Tech aboard two destroyers before his honorable discharge in 1959. Returning to Jacksonville, he was employed by Burroughs Corp. in the Gainesville area until his desire to serve his country prompted him to return to active duty with the U.S. Air Force in 1962. There he served as Electronics Tech in SAC Command, where he was assigned to several B-52 bases. After leaving the Flight Line, he was assigned to training where he controlled the Fitness and Weight Control Program for the Communications Group at Andrews Air Force Base. At the time he cross-trained into computers, thinking that would be a nice job upon retirement and would also get him moved. Since he’d been at Andrews for several years, he and Val had hoped for an overseas assignment, however, he was assigned to the Data Automation Command just on the other side of the base, where he wrote the first program for the Security Police and served as Assistant Manager of the Data Processing Center. In 1983 Charlie and Val were delighted when he was assigned to USAFE HQ in Ramstein, Germany. While there he was Manager of the division serving as trouble shooter between Sperry, INC. and all bases in the USAFE Command. His final assignment was in Procurement for the DAC, where he wrote the contract between the Air Force and Sperry, Inc. He retired on July 01, 1987 after serving his country with dedication, devotion and honor for a total of 28 years. He remained a member of the AFSA Chapter 559 in Jacksonville until his death.
Charlie was a member of Mandarin United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Worship Committee for four years, member of the Church Council for several years, a greeter, a host for funeral receptions, a member of the Mail-out Committee and always saying “yes” when asked to help. He was a proud member of the Senior Group, The Golden Triangle.
Charlie was an avid square dancer for 48 years until his health forced him to be a “spectator” in 2015. He was joined in this activity with his beloved wife, Val, following their marriage in 1976. They danced overseas and in many states, and the last 29 years in Florida serving several clubs as Treasurer, Vice President and President. While dancing in the D.C. area, he and Val served in the WASCA Executive Board for three years. After retirement, he and Val continued dancing, serving as Northeast Florida Association President for two years and Chairman of the Northeast Fall Festival for 1996 and 2005. Charlie and Val were editors of the Northeast publication “The Grapevine” for 11 years, winning the judges Second Place National Award for the Best Overall Square Dance Publication in 2002. They also served as Florida State Square and Round Dance Convention Chairman in May 2005. In 2006 they were elected to the Florida Federation Executive Board, culminating as President in 2011. In 2012, Charlie and Val were inducted into the Florida Square Dance Hall of Fame.
