On this 3rd anniversary of the passing of Charles I reflected on my first recollection of him in December of 1989. He was in my new hire class at American Airlines. We went through Boeing 727 Flight Engineer
Training together. He was a bit older than me and I Iooked up to him. We started talking one day about being former navy pilots and I asked him what squadrons he was in. He said Attack Squadron 55. I then asked him if he knew Maury Fitzgerald. He said yes, he was my Commanding Officer. I said Maury is my dad ! Small world. We became good friends. I went to visit him and his wife at his home in the early 90s. Lost track of him as we continued our career at American Airlines. I will always keep Charles as I finish up my career at American. I can still remember some of his sound advice and guidance he gave me early on. My dad loved Charles also. He would say oh yes, I remember Chuck at VA -55. I would give him all the strange projects and missions.....he was good!
Miss you Chuck !

Chuck lived across the street from us in Maryland. We were a young family, new to the neighborhood, and Chuck took pity on us. He'd wander over when our lawnmower wouldn't work and loaned us tools and expertise when anything needed fixing.
Our children were young in those days. They would take turns delivering banana bread or something homemade because Chuck would let that kid reach into a huge jar of M & Ms that he had in the living room. They could keep as much as they could grab in a fistful. Every kid wanted a turn at being the delivery person. We loved having him over to play cards with us and the kids. He was always great around our kids joking and teasing each of them.
Over this past year, we sent emails and left phone messages, not knowing that Chuck had passed. We thought it odd that he didn't reply. Our much more savvy daughter in law thought to search on line. So we just found out yesterday.
We have missed him over the years since he moved away and are sad that he has left this Earth. We kinda had in the back of our minds that we might get to Vermont someday and drop in on him.

I know Chuck personally and professionally as one of his Commanding Officers and also socially. Marylen and I thought highly of him and will miss him. He was a calm, personable, reliable and professional pilot and Naval Officer. He was always ready and prepared to head out on combat missions, day or night from USS Hancock in Vietnam Rolling Thunder OPS. He will be missed. We lost track of him on the East Coast, but my son Steve, an ex Naval Aviator, (F-18's) was 15 year younger and attended the American Air Lines Training together in 1989' and remained friends at American. Steve has made comments in this list of friends. We live in Edmonds Wa, but unable to attend the grave side service. God bless his family and all the friends that will miss him. God Bless, Maurice and Marylen Fitzgerald

As one of Chuck's colleagues at American Airlines, I had the privilege to have known Chuck since the B-727 days at the Washington, D.C. domicile. I was especially honored when Chuck arranged for me to fly with him on his retirement trip. We had many a great layover. Mostly the B-767 Los Angeles layovers at Marina Del Rey and having dinner at Chuck's favorite restaurant, Alejo's.
Like others, I lost a good friend. We frequently corresponded and spoke with each other by phone. Chuck's passing will leave an empty spot in the lives of those who knew him. He was a great person and pilot alike. Chuck will be sorely missed.
May God bless his family.

Chuck and I became friends while going through initial training at American Airlines in December of 1989. I remember asking him what his navy background was. He said he flew A4s off the USS Hancock. I then asked him if he knew Maurice Fitzgerald. He responded "sure, he was my skipper at Attack Squadron 55". I responded, " he is my dad!" Small world. Chuck and I became good friends. He was a cool, calm, oustanding man who touched me in a very special way. I will miss him dearly.

Chuck was not only a squadron mate of mine in Vietnam but we were next door neighbors in Lemoore, CA. We got to spend quite a bit of time together and became close friends. Although we drifted apart in the following years, our friendship rekindled during the several reunions of this past decade. He was a quality guy, always upbeat and enthusiastic. Our condolences to his family. Denny and Anne Sapp, Gig Harbor, WA.

Chuck was in my squadron during Viet Nam...he was a superb combat pilot and Naval Officer. We were great friends and I will miss his lively humor in emails we exchanged in our later lives.

Chuck was a great friend and worthy adversary of witty repartee. We roomed together aboard the USS Hancock during the 1972 Vietnam Cruise. Happily I was able to spend a few days with him at the Tailhook convention in 2015 where we finally had time to catch up. It feels like I've lost a part of my past.
