ADAMS, Charles Otterbein age 99, of Dayton, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from pneumonia at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Born April 8, 1912 in Dayton to Charles Winford & Viola Hicks Adams, Charles Otterbein Adams was one of the famous "Flood Twins" and a prominent survivor of the Great Dayton Flood of 1913. A conscientious human being of strong moral and ethical fabric, Charles was a reminder of the extraordinary spirit and capacities of human nature. ADAMS, Charles Otterbein age 99, of Dayton, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from pneumonia at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Born April 8, 1912 in Dayton to Charles Winford & Viola Hicks Adams, Charles Otterbein Adams was one of the famous "Flood Twins" and a prominent survivor of the Great Dayton Flood of 1913. A conscientious human being of strong moral and ethical fabric, Charles was a reminder of the extraordinary spirit and capacities of human nature. An engineer by trade and a humanitarian at heart - he presented Dayton Flood Talks around the Miami Valley to help the community remember the flood and its historical importance. He joined the Engineers Club of Dayton in 1937. He was its longest living member and a constant presence attending meetings of the New Barn Gang up through the final weeks of his life. Charles attended Steele High School in Dayton and graduated in 1937 from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Following his graduation from U.C., Charles worked as a process engineer for Delco Products Division of General Motors. In 1938 he married Loraine Ida Bagnoli and they remained together until her passing in 2000. He served in the United States Army from 1939 – 1943 and served in WWII. He was a founding member of Normandy Church in Centerville, OH. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Loraine Ida. He is survived by two daughters: Nancy Meyers of St. Louis, MO and Jeanne Philipp of Dayton, OH; and son: James Adams & wife Naz Edwards of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren: Chris & Andrea Westland, Soren & Nichole Gormley, Jonathan & Jennifer Westland, Shawn Gormley & Sharyn Hunter, Heather & Bruce Bell, Thaine Odom and Keira Philipp-Schnurer; and 6 great grandchildren: Lois, Kate, Maya, Gavin, Seeley, and Sawyer. Family and friends will gather to celebrate Charles' life on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME – FAR HILLS CHAPEL. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 21 beginning at 10 AM at Normandy United Methodist Church in Centerville, OH - www.normandyumc.org.
