Arnhart, Charles R., age 89, of South Knoxville, died peacefully at Mercy Hospice on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010. A life-long resident of Knoxville, Charlie served his country during WWII as an instrument mechanic in the Pacific Islands for the Army Air Corp. After leaving the army, he began his optical career at Bausch and Lomb before opening his own optical laboratory, Volunteer Optical, which he ran for thirty years. After retirement, he was co-owner of Tapp Optical, where he continued to enjoy the optical business. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to enjoy his hobby of landscaping, whether in his own yard or at his church. His beautiful yards attracted compliments from all who saw them. A faithful member for over fifty years of Lake Hills Presbyterian Church, Charlie served several terms as an Elder and served on the Property Committee until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Dorothy Schettler Arnhart and five siblings. He leaves two daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Charles Child and Debbie and Mike Asquith; five grandchildren and their spouses: Julie Claxton (David), Andy Asbury (Gina), Brian Child (Holly), Christopher (Katie) and Steven Asquith; and six great-grand children: Abby and Andy Asbury, Lauren and Erin Claxton, Sarah and Emily Child . He also leaves behind a special niece and nephew, Mary Ann Pruiett and Rusty McNab and a companion of seven years, Dorothy Johnson. The family will receive friends at Lake Hills Presbyterian Church in the fellowship hall from 5:30 – 7:30 Wednesday evening, with a memorial service to follow at 7:30 in the sanctuary. Family and friends will meet Thursday morning at 11:00 at Sherwood Memorial Garden for an interment service with James McTyre officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Lake Hills Presbyterian Church, 3805 Maloney Road, Knoxville, TN 37920. Condolences may also be offered at www.berryfuneralhome.com.

Sherry and Debbie,
Although no words can dull the ache of losing one's parent(s), hopefully they can at least recall correctly many good times. Being the "kid" cousin, I have many grand memories of the many visits, dinners, and holidays spent in your home. Those times were always exciting and special to me. Your Mom and Dad made sure of that. I never recall seeing Uncle Charlie anything but thrilled to see me as well. I'm pretty sure he made everyone else feel that way too. He was, indeed, Genuine, and that is a rare quality. His patience and generosity will be long remembered by my family, and many others, I am sure.
Love, H.C. & Maria.

It is at least a shame and at worst a sin that, as years go by, we grow distant from those we love and respect. My Uncle Charlie was the epitome of a man. Strong, patient, kind, caring - I could use all of the available space in this entry with positive words and they still would not be adequate to paint a picture of this superlative human being. Goodbye, Uncle Charlie. You will be missed.
