Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 25, 2011.

Charles William Axtell, 66, of Marble Falls, formerly of Dimmitt, TX, died April 23, 2011 after a two year battle with cancer. He was born June 29, 1944 in Amherst, TX to Ray and Mattie Jordan Axtell.

Charles graduated from Springlake High School. He attended West Texas A and M University and graduated from Texas Tech University.

He married Diane Field on January 27, 1968.

He served with the 25th Infantry in Vietnam in 1968-1969.

He farmed and ranched in the Texas Panhandle near Sunnyside for over 30 years. In 2006 Charles and Diane retired and moved to Marble Falls to be near their son, Paul and his family.

Charles walked the Christian walk in how he lived his life as well as through Stephen Ministry, singing in the First United Methodist choir, directing the choir in Dimmitt, and singing at area nursing homes. He will always be remembered for his kindness and patience. Charles brought ingenuity and commitment to everything he did.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter Holly Meurisse and husband Mark of Sydney, Australia; son Paul Axtell and wife Kris of Johnson City; grandchildren Nathan, John, Michael and Daniel Axtell; sister-in-law Carol Dahlstrom and husband Roger.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

My heart goes out to you, Diane, Holly, Paul and to the rest of Charlie's family on the loss of such a wonderful guy. It has been said that when we grieve, it's mainly for ourselves, and so it is with me. I will always miss this great friend. We loved to sing together in the "Mighty Methodist Men's Quartet" for many years; we shared the same experience as choir directors as we did our stints with the same choir, and he was totally devoted to that job; and he always appreciated my sense of humor (or seemed to, at least). He was a great, kind-hearted, committed guy and I'll miss him, as I know you and his other friends "back home" and around Marble Falls will. May God bless you.
