Charles W. Dennehy, 90, passed away quietly on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, New York due to subdural hematoma. Charlie was born in North Tarrytown, New York on January 11, 1923 to Charles and Catherine Dennehy, as the middle of three children. Charlie was predeceased by his sister Julie and brother Jackie.

Hastily trained as a combat Medic during World War Two, Charlie served in the 5307 Composite Unit, more famously known as "Merrill's Marauders" and one of the predecessors of the modern U.S. Army Ranger Regiment. Known as 'Doc' by the men he served with, Charlie persevered through the duration of the Marauders' campaign in the "Forgotten Theater" of Burma despite bouts of malaria and starvation, a feat only 200 of the unit's original 2997 soldiers accomplished.

His commander attempted to award him the Silver Star for heroic acts such as sheltering his patients with his own body under both mortar attack and machine gun fire. His continuing service in the 475th Infantry Regiment and MARS Task Force took him from Burma to China, and he was decorated with a Bronze Star with "V" device and Oak Leaf Cluster (in addition to the Marauders' Bronze Star unit citation), as well as the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four service stars and medals from the Chinese Combat Command.

Charlie later worked at General Motors Tarrytown for over 30 years, where he met the love of his life, Jennie DeGrande. They were married in 1961 and lived in North Tarrytown, New York, Thornwood, New York, Tucson, Arizona and Largo, Florida for a total of 48 years before her passing due to cancer in 2009. Heartbroken from her loss, he moved back to New York to be cared for by his daughter's family in Hopewell Junction until the time of his death. Charlie will be remembered by many for his wonderful sense of humor, gentleness, kindness, honesty, bravery and love for his family. He was a joy to be around and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa with her husband Jason, and Charlie's grandson Conor. Charlie's sister-in-law Hannah lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and there are surviving cousins in both New York and Florida.

Viewing will take place at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Croton-on-Hudson, New York on Saturday, October 26th from 4pm to 7pm. Funeral mass will be at St. Mary's Church, Fishkill, New York on Monday, October 28th at 10am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his name to Red Cloud Indian School, 100 Mission Drive, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota 57770 or St. Labre Indian School, Ashland, Montana 59004
