GOLDIE, Charles H., of Scituate formerly of Bedford, died peacefully at home on February 1, 2014, surrounded by his family, at the age of 89.

Charles was the beloved husband of the late Katharine Rudolf Goldie, and devoted father of James H. Goldie and his wife Susan of Lexington and Charlotte G. Britton and her husband Michael of Scituate. Charles was the brother of the late Oma Louise Davis of Arlington and the late Ruth Jackson of Stoughton. He was the proud grandfather of Anna, William and Samuel Goldie and Kyle and Tobey Britton.

Charles grew up in the Montello section of Brockton, MA and graduated from Brockton High School in 1942. He attended MIT as a member of the Navy V-12 program, where he studied Electrical Engineering (Course VI) and graduated in 1945. He was a member of the MIT track team, and in 1945 was the New England Intercollegiate Champion half miler. Charles went on to obtain his master's degree at MIT, and worked at the High Voltage Research Laboratory from 1946 to 1953.

In 1953 he joined High Voltage Engineering Corporation, where he devoted his career to the design, construction, and improvement of Van de Graaff accelerators, which were installed at nuclear physics research centers throughout the world.

He and Katharine were married in 1952, and lived in Bedford at the farmhouse at 245 Davis Road from 1955 to 2010. His early morning, 2-mile runs along Davis Road to St. Michael's and back continued for nearly 40 years. In 2010, they moved to Scituate to be near their daughter, Charlotte.

Plans for a memorial service and a reception to celebrate his life are still in the making, and will be made available at the Richardson Gaffey link below.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to The Salvation Army, 25 Shawmut Rd., Canton, MA 02021.
