In Memory of Butch Houghton
June 3, 1947 - June 1, 2013
I had the privilege of being able to call Mr. Butch my friend for the last 10 or so years. We met a few years after I moved to Louisiana.
I have to admit, Mr. Butch was one of my heroes. He was always willing to help out anyone who needed him. But, he wouldn't do things “for” you – he'd teach you how to do them for yourself.
I'll never forget the time that I had broken the muffler mount on my motorcycle and asked him if he could help me fix it. He told me to bring the bike by his house – that he had a welding machine out back and we could get it fixed up. The next weekend, I rode the bike over to his house, expecting him to spot weld it back together. Imagine my surprise when he told me that if he did it, it really wouldn't help me. Instead, he showed me where the machine was and told me how to adjust it for what I needed. Then he patiently watched as I welded the metal together. I had never welded before and the weld was a really ugly “gorilla weld”, but I had done it. I still have that motorcycle – a constant reminder that I was able to fix it myself, with a little guidance from a good friend.
That is what I remember most about Mr. Butch. He was always there to offer his guidance to anyone who asked. He never pushed it on you. He'd just wait patiently until you asked. I also remember that he didn't pull any punches. If you did something stupid – he'd tell you it was a stupid move. But he always tried to help get you back on track.
I remember when my mother got really sick and I was driving to North Carolina to see her in the hospital. I called Mr. Butch and he listened as I cried and railed for over 45 minutes. He didn't try to tell me things would be better. He didn't try to sugar coat it. But he did listen. And, I suppose he somehow knew that was what I needed at the time. He just listened.
Mr. Butch was one of those good old guys that we need more of in our lives. He never let his own problems keep him from reaching out to others who needed him. That is what I consider a hero – someone who is always there. With rock solid advice. No ulterior motives. Just an honest desire to help out those who need it. Butch was a true example of an unconditional friend.
Mr. Butch, even though we will all miss you, you will continue to live on in our hearts and memories. I will never forget you.

Dad I love you. I will miss all of the great times we have had. I thank you for making me the person I am am today. I will miss our afternoon drive home chatting on the radio. We had some good times chasing DX as a tag team. I hoped to give you a personal Elmer award when you came home from the hospital. I will save it for when we meet once again some day. Most of all thanks for being my dad. I miss you already. I love you!
