Charles Louis Ivins, Sr., 85, died Saturday, August 16, in his residence under the care of Community Hospice.
Born in Centreville, MD May 28, 1929 he was one of eight children born and raised on the family farm in Queen Anne's County. He was pulled away from school early to help work the farm and provide for the family. He was a hard worker, known to sometimes work more than one job to provide for his family. While living in Maryland, he was a farmer, a supervisor of a fertilizer plant and worked in agricultural management and sales of farm related products. He served in the National Guard, was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Club. He loved getting together with his friends and going to the local dances on the weekends. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting deer, rabbit, geese, ducks and quail and loved to go fishing when he could find the time and he served as a hunting guide for many seasons. At age 45, he moved his family to Florida where he took up a trade in Commercial Construction and was implemental in building schools, post offices, colleges, parking garage complexes and civic centers in the Lakeland, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater areas. He retired from full time work at the age of 62 but still continued to do small construction jobs on the side from time to time. He and his family later moved to Twin City, GA where he spent his time planting a garden and raising chickens, getting to know the local people and trying to enjoy his golden years. He loved to plant things and watching them grow and always had a large garden. He greatly enjoyed sharing his harvest with different ones in the community. He said he felt closest to God when he was working with his hands in the dirt or when he was in the quietness of nature. The legacy of his life journey will be remembered and held dear by his family and friends. Many great memories and stories of his young adventures and his hunting trips will continue to live on and be retold by those who were privileged to hear him tell them. He was a hard worker, a good husband, father and provider and he will be greatly missed by those he has left behind. He was baptized in 1992 and was a member of the Swainsboro Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses.
Mr. Ivins is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris Plummer Ivins, 3 daughters, Joyce Kay Carnley, Lois Ann Clark and Pearla Jean Braswell, 3 sons, Charles Louis Ivins, Jr., Carl Austin Ivins and Harvey Randall Ivins, 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
