CAMDEN - The Rev. Charles D. Jewell, 88, went home to be with the Lord on April 6, 2014, with his family at his side. He was born in Canaan on April 10, 1925, the son of Lillace (Burrill) and Harry Jewell. Charles graduated from Skowhegan High School before serving our country in the Navy during World War II. In 1948, he married Phyllis Dixon. Charles attended Elohim Bible Institute in Castile, N.Y., graduating in 1962. He came back to Maine and served as pastor of Canaan Calvary Church for 20 years. Then he served as pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Temple for several years while also working at Bass Shoe in Wilton. Charles and Phyllis moved to Hudson, Fla., where they worked for Word Of Life until his retirement. They moved back to Maine in 2009 to be closer to their family. For Charles, every day was an opportunity to share the Gospel. He never stopped preaching and passing out Gospel tracts. Wherever he happened to be, that was his mission field. Charles was predeceased by his parents; wife Phyllis Jewell, in 2011; great-grandson Andy Clark; and brother David Jewell. He is survived by his seven children, H. Stephen Jewell, and his wife, Julie, of Skowhegan, P. Sue Coon and her husband, Skip, of Wyoming, N.Y., Deborah Heaward and her husband, Larry, of Deland, Fla., Dan Jewell, of Bristol, Conn., Martha Lohness and her husband, John, of North Waldoboro, Rebekah Cruz and her husband, Mario, of Denver, Pa., and Ruth Lydecker and her husband, Matt, of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren (and one more on the way); sisters Gloria Hewett and Rose Marie Fernald; and sister-in-law Faylene Jewell. Family and friends are invited to visit from 11 a.m until the time of services on Thursday, April 10, at Canaan Calvary Church, Main Street, Canaan, where a funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. with pastor Kevin Brooks and Levi Olsen officiating. Interment will be in the spring at Fairview Cemetery, Canaan. In honor of Pastor Jewell's love of sharing the Gospel, memorial contributions should be directed to any Christian mission work or church. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
