to Charlie's family
It is with heavey heart & much sorrow I learned last nite about my true friend,[my connection,Daytona Beach Life Guard] We both were featured in a 1959 art. in the Atl. Jour./Const Mag. sect.[front page covg.]Charlie loved the Life Guard Corp.. We spent many yrs.at the annual reunions togrther. last yr, 4 of us met in St. Aug. on Fri nite& went down to Daytona for the reunion the next day.We planed to do the same this yr. I would have contacted him in the next couple of wks to plan. What a shock. I was in Athens in Feb. on bus. on a Thur, Fri. & Sat. Challie took me to a rest. on thur nite [his fav] On Fri he picked me up & carried me to the Athens Co. Club for lunch, again his treat. After that he drove me around Athens for over an hr. talking. As he dropped me off at the hotel, I said I am going to take you out tonite your choice my treat. Caarlie said "not this time, i am not feeling well right now' Little did I know, he had told me he had some health problems with his toes, but that was the extent. He looked good [he was one of the best looking guards on the beach if not the best] and he maintained that look to the last time I saw him. I guess he knew his helth problem at that time, but did not want io burden others.I want you to know Charlie gave advise & assistance to my son when he started up his now soccessful ins. buss in Atlanta & we are both greatful.Charlie was a unique, a true loyal friend. When we gather in Daytona in Sept.[God willing]ther will be a hole, it want seem right. I did not know you girls, but knew Beverly well.Iwillmiss ole Charlie but have numerous fond memories etched in stoneinside my head that will never leave Robert [Bobby] [TT] Sherrell Fitzgerald Ga.

I first met Charlie in 1976 when my wife started her 3rd year of college @ UGA & we met up quite often @ Ronnie B's, Cleve's or some of Athen's other lively after hours places, but the thing I'll always remember was that big old smile on Charlie's face. He truly enjoyed meeting new people coming into Athens & made lot's of friends of us younger folks, who were totally new to the area. Of course, he was also kind enough to share a lot of good advice, as to who to buy things from, who to visit @ the Banks when you needed a loan & of course where to get the best deal on insurance. Charlie was a good friend & avid promoter of Athens-Clarke County. May you rest in Peace my Friend & thanks for all the good times + the good sound advice you shared with all of us.
