Cheryl Shupe Crosby Southerland, 60, died on January 8, 2011, at Hospice of the Golden Isles, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma, on February 11, 1950, to Bob and Evelyn Shupe. She moved to Brunswick when she was 10 years old, and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1968. She was a graduate of Brunswick Junior College and Georgia Southern University, and later received a Master's Degree in Education. Her interest in business education was the foundation of her teaching career, which spanned 30 years in the Glynn County Public School system, beginning at Brunswick High School and ending at Glynn Academy, where she retired in May 2009. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she served as Department Leader of Technology & Career at Glynn Academy for many years, faculty sponsor of FBLA and co-advisor of High Tide, the Glynn Academy annual yearbook.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents and her niece, Natalie Ruth Shupe. She is survived by husband Mike Southerland from Grand Island, FL; two sons, Craig Crosby (Lafayette, LA) and Chris Crosby (Jesup); step-father Emory Johnson (Brunswick); siblings Mitzi Smith (Danny); Patti Crawford (Benny); Bobby Shupe (Donna), all from Brunswick; Barbara Hilley (John) from Maryland; and sister-in-law Janie Southerland (Mt. Dora, FL). She had loving relationships with her five nieces and nephews: Nathan and Niki Shupe, and Baron, Blake and Belle Smith, all from Brunswick. She was treasured by many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as countless students and colleagues from Glynn Academy, friends from many walks of life, and her adoring "Chicas."
Cheryl was a dedicated wife, a devoted mother, a loving daughter, a nurturing sister, and a good friend. She had a great passion for the outdoors which included sailing, fishing, beachcombing, and boating on the many lakes and springs around her home in Florida. She and Mikey loved to travel, whether it was biking on the Harley or exploring new destinations around the US. Cheryl's lifestyle was selfless and she exuded love, tenderness and true caring toward everyone she encountered in both her professional and personal life.
She packed a whole lot of fun and a whole lot of love into her 60 years. "Cherly" loved to have fun, and she DID!
A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday, January 12th at 2:00 pm, officiated by Reverend Rob Grotheer.
In lieu of flowers, Cheryl requested memorials to Hospice of the Golden Isles.
Edo Miller and Sons is in charge of arrangements.

When looking for friends from the past I found out about Evelyn and then Cheryl. I am so sorry for your loss. I knew the Shupe family when I was a little girl. Our families spent so much time together. I looked at the pictures that are posted and saw the outward beauty she had but could also see the inner beauty that radiated from her smile. I pray the peace of the Lord will comfort you and your family. Tibby Smith Hollingsworth

Chris and Craig, Michael and I met you when you were young boys. Cheryl and I were best friends all thru Jr. High and High School. She was the best of best friends and we shared so many happy moments together. Michael & I lived in Spain, CA and finally SC, so we didn't keep in touch like we should have, but I'll always treasure the life I lived with Cheryl as my friend! I know she's out of pain and in a better place, but I know it's left a big hole in your hearts. May God give you His peace that passes all human understanding as only He can. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Lynn Major Patsolic and Michael Patsolic

My heart is so sad for the family, but I know that Cheryl will live on in your hearts. I know that Mr. Shupe, Ms. Evelyn, and Natalie were there to greet her at Heaven's gate and that is why she was smiling when she passed. My family all sends their love and prayers.

May God bless and comfort you all during this time. Cheryl aka "Ms. Crosby" has been and always will be an inspiration to me. She loved life and her boys. I made sure I had at least one class with her during my three years at Glynn Academy and had the privilege of serving as Vice President of FBLA under her. She had a special gift. I remember every year at Christmas time she would bring a record player in and play the Carpenters' Christmas album while we worked on our assignments. I always think of her when I hear them. She was a wonderful lady and she will be dearly missed. Chris and Craig, celebrate your mom, she was and is now an angel. Heather Campbell-Tucker

May you rest in peace now, though I did not know you personally, my brother died like you, and now knows no pain. My 2 children remember you briefly while attending GA years ago and I am sure you touched so many lives. Your death allows us to reflect once again on our own lives and reminds us to celebrate each new day. You will be sadly missed by friends and family, but surely you will see them all again!
