Christopher Bates Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2013.

After a long fought battle with esophageal cancer, Christopher Scott Bates passed on June 1st. 2013. Christopher was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on November 4th, 1968. The world has not been the same since. He lived his early years in the southeast before finally landing at home in Thousand Oaks. His love for baseball and soccer was immense and he played both while attending Madrona Elementary and Redwood Middle. Ultimately deciding that baseball was his thing, he played 3rd base for Thousand Oaks High School while making friends that would last a lifetime.
He graduated in 1987 and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, but decided to play college ball at San Louis Obispo. Because of unforeseen injuries, baseball came to an end and his other dream of story telling led him to California State Long Beach. There, he pursued a degree in film. He spent the next 18 years of his life hitting home runs and having strikeouts in the Entertainment industry. Travelling the world from China to Brazil, he shot over 25 studio and independent feature films and a short he could call his own.
Chris had experience from development through post-production. In the early days, Chris started work for Filmwerks making action movies in locations all over the world; From 2003-2007, Chris was part of the co-founding management of "MeSoft", a Media Services company that specialized in securely transferring media worldwide for Hollywood Studios and Production Entities.
Recently, Chris prepped "Man of Tai Chi" being directed by Keanu Reeves; and completed the feature film "Man with the Iron Fists" for Universal Pictures, directed by RZA from WuTang Clan. Additionally, the team at Maxmedia has been involved in production, acquisition, and distribution of films from all over the world.

C Bates,
I miss you. I have to let you know that this has hit me quite hard. We grew up together in T.O....you were like a younger 'extended family' brother. Through the years, I would hear every now and again that you were in the film business and plugging along quite happily. Here is a big hug and high 5...now go take that Producer's Chair in the sky and enjoy the ride! Until we meet again ...

I know it was just a short time that we worked together on the film A night in Old Mexico, but it was an experience I would never forget. You are a part of that memory. I know I'll never get to say this to you in person, since you are now home with God, but I just wanted you know that in the end I came to respect you as a person and a teacher for the film industry. Learning that you are very sincere and passionate person in everything you do, regardless in how tired you were. You showed me that regardless of circumstance you need to work hard and understand that things happen but we need to move forward. Thank you for just being an overall good person, which is so rare to find in this world today.Thank you for everything and the opportunities you gave me. God bless Chris

To my friend, Christopher “Bubba” Bates,

Well my friend, unfortunately our journeys together have to temporarily part ways. It has truly been my honor, and pleasure to call you my friend for so many years. From 7th grade till now, you have always been the same kind, caring, compassionate, fun, life loving human being that everyone of us should aspire to be! You have enriched all of the lives you have touched over the years, a true Gift from God! I am saddened in the fact that you are no longer with us, and that you had to suffer with such a painful fight, yet I rejoice in knowing that I will one day see you again, and that you are amongst your lost loved ones.

As I sit here writing this, remembering all of the times we have shared, I am amazed in the fact that you are one of my only friends that I can recall, never having an argument or disagreement with. Now that could be that I am just getting old, and having memory issues, or it just shows the character that you possessed was one in a million. I'm pretty sure it is the later, at least that is what I'm hoping.

I am in aw of the strength, courage, and determination that you had in your battle with such a terrible illness. If there is anyone who exemplifies those attributes, it is definitely you! Your selflessness inspires me to be a better man, and for that I thank you. My life has truly been enriched because you are in it, and will forever be in it, until we see one another again!

I love you Chris

Shannon
