Mr. Claud Battey (C.B.) Stillwell, age 94 of 521 LaPorte Street, Rome, died Wednesday night, May 9, 2012 after a very short illness. He led a very active life until a few months before his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lyndall, two years ago, five siblings and a grandson.

A native of Rome, Mr. Stillwell was born November 27, 1917, son of the late Oliver B. Stillwell and Mamie Lanham Stillwell. C. B. was a long time member of Second Avenue United Methodist Church where he held many leadership positions including choir director and Sunday school teacher.

Mr. Stillwell was employed at Rome Provision Company, which was purchased by Curtis Packing Company, for over 72 years and even worked part-time into his 80's. He held many management positions during his tenure and retired as General Manager.

He was a WWII veteran serving in the Philippines with the U.S. Army 14th Emergency Rescue Boat Squadron that rescued downed pilots. When not actively rescuing pilots, he wrote many poems about his beloved family, the city of Rome, the country he loved and the military life he experienced. These poems were later published in a book by one of his grandchildren. He received his Honorable Discharge on December 8, 1945.

After his wife died, Mr. Stillwell became an active member of Heyman Hospice Support Group which brought immeasurable comfort and pleasure to his life. He made many friends there and found new meaning to his life. One of his joys was putting on "shows" for many of the Assisted Living homes in the Rome area and proving once again that even into his 90's he still had much to give his fellow man.

Mr. Stillwell is survived by his daughters Madeline (Jerry) Dunwoody and Suzanne (Lewis) Copeland of Rome and Lynn (Bob) Mashburn of Cumming, Georgia. He has eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He will be fondly remembered by all his family members and especially his three generations of grandchildren, as "Poppy".

Funeral services for Mr. Stillwell were held at Second Avenue United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Tom McElroy officiating. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery. The Honor Guard of the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion will provide military rites at the graveside. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the church prior to the service. Grandsons and Great-Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Family members are at the homes of Madeline Dunwoody, 9 Eastridge Court and Suzanne Copeland, 443 Rustic Ridge Road, Rome, GA.

In lieu of flowers, C. B. requests that memorial gifts be made to Second Avenue United Methodist Church, 801 East 2nd Avenue, Rome, GA 30161.

Daniel's Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements for Mr. C. B. Stillwell.
