MAYFIELD, CLELL ISAAC, passed away on October 25, 2012. He was born in Corner, Ala., on December 10, 1925. He grew up in Birmingham, Ala., and attended Jones Valley High School, the University of Alabama, and the Birmingham School of Law. He was admitted to the bar in 1956. After several years of practicing law, he was employed by the Social Security Payment Center, where he worked until 1978. Clell was predeceased by his parents, Ernest Willis Mayfield and Zora Caddell Mayfield, and a brother, Rupert Clyde Mayfield. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Barbara Crigler Mayfield; two sons, Michael Louis Mayfield of Birmingham and Scott McClellan (Shannon) Mayfield of Millburn, N.J.; one granddaughter, Sarah Remi Mayfield of Millburn; two brothers, James Cleon (Virginia) Mayfield and Dr. Dewey Edward (Phyllis) Mayfield, both of Birmingham; and 12 nieces and nephews. Clell was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church, the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. He was Past Master of Birmingham Fraternal Lodge 384. Clell served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater, being deployed as a replacement during the Battle of Bulge. He served until he was injured by gunfire in April 1945 as his regiment moved toward Berlin. Clell received two Purple Hearts for his service. The funeral service for Clell Mayfield was Saturday, October 27, 2012 in the chapel of Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Ala., with his brother, Dr. Dewey Mayfield, and his long-time pastor, Dr. James Auchmuty, officiating. Burial, Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham. Memorial gifts may be made to the "Found Faithful Fund" of Shades Crest Baptist Church, 452 Park Avenue, Hoover, AL 35226.
