Dr. Coldwell Daniel, III, a prominent free market economist, long-time University of Memphis professor, and decorated veteran, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2012. Dr. Daniel was born August 30, 1926, in New Orleans, the son of Coldwell Daniel, Jr., and the former Josephine Wicke. While at Alcee Fortier High School, he played clarinet with future jazz greats such as Al Hirt and was named a Louisiana All Star in football, continuing to play first-string guard as a freshman at Tulane University. Dr. Coldwell Daniel, III, a prominent free market economist, long-time University of Memphis professor, and decorated veteran, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2012. Dr. Daniel was born August 30, 1926, in New Orleans, the son of Coldwell Daniel, Jr., and the former Josephine Wicke. While at Alcee Fortier High School, he played clarinet with future jazz greats such as Al Hirt and was named a Louisiana All Star in football, continuing to play first-string guard as a freshman at Tulane University. He received a B.B.A. from Tulane, an M.B.A. from Indiana University, a Ph.D. in economics from The University of Virginia (where he was a member of the Raven Society), and was a post-doctoral fellow at The University of Chicago. He became a full professor of economics in 1958, and taught at The University of Virginia, Pamona College, the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Houston, and, for 34 years, at The University of Memphis, retiring in 2004. He was awarded three Fulbright scholarships to teach economics: at the University of Dacca (then East Pakistan); at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China; and at the University of Sofia, Bulgaria. He is the author of 135 peer-reviewed journal articles and of the text Mathematical Models in Microeconomics. Dr. Daniel was the first president of The University of Virginia's Graduate Economics Club, the first permanent chairman of the University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Economics, the first director of the University of Southern Mississippi's Bureau of Business and Economic Research, and the first Fogelman College recipient of The University of Memphis' Distinguished Research Award. A dignified and genial man, Dr. Daniel is a veteran of WWII and Korea and received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, three Bronze Battle Stars, and 12 other military decorations. In addition, he successfully operated real estate ventures in Memphis, Mississippi, and Louisiana. He is survived by his wife, Luojia Mao Daniel, of Memphis; daughter Anne Alexis Pons, of Paris, France; son Coldwell Khyber Daniel, IV, of Memphis; and granddaughters Zoe, Daphne, and Felicity Pons. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 11, 57 p.m., at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 5599 Poplar Ave.; a memorial service will be held Thursday, January 12, 1 p.m., at Christ United Methodist Church, 4488 Poplar Ave., Wilson Chapel; and a military burial with honors will be in Biloxi National Cemetery, Friday, January 13, 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Dr. Daniel may be sent to UVa, P.O.
