Collingwood S. Karmody, a resident of Cape Cod and Hilton Head Island, S.C. was 84 when he passed on November 15, 2013. Collin is survived by his wife Patricia Priestley, children Maoliosa, Collin and Michele, step son Joseph, grand children Nicholas, Rebecca, Mark, Maxwell and Alexander. Siblings Jean, Angela, Phyllis, Winston and many nieces and nephews. Collin had extended family and countless friends residing across the United States, Canada, England and Trinidad. Collin is survived by his wife Patricia Priestley, children Maoliosa, Collin and Michele, step son Joseph, grand children Nicholas, Rebecca, Mark, Maxwell and Alexander. Siblings Jean, Angela, Phyllis, Winston and many nieces and nephews.

Collin had extended family and countless friends residing across the United States, Canada, England and Trinidad. Collin was born on 25th September, 1929 in Trinidad & Tobago. Collin was very active and loved, tennis, cycling, cricket and squash. He was intensely interested in everything the world had to offer. Possessing a curious and open mind he could actively participate and enjoyed discussions on any subject. He highly valued education, and helping others in need. Collin was mentor to some and friend to many.

Collin studied medicine at the University College Dublin (now the National University of Ireland) where he won the Ambrose-Birmingham Gold Medal and received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO) in 1955. After graduation, he continued his career at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the Institute of Laryngology and Otology of the University of London, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Harvard University as Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine, and the University of Vermont. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1960. Collin worked for 30 years as surgeon and professor at Tufts New England Medical Center where he was later appointed Professor Emeritus. Collin was widely traveled and presented research papers and lectured through the world. Professor Karmody had served as Examiner for the fellowship examinations of the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, the American Board of Otolaryngology, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

He held Visiting Professorships at Harvard University, The State University of New York, the University of Vermont, the University of Tennessee, the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Chile. Professor Karmody held many distinguished positions. He was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was Professor of Otolaryngology and served as Interim Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Professor Karmody received the Honor Award of the AAO – HNS and was consultant to the Board of Rehabilitation in Massachusetts.

In 2005, he and two colleagues discovered a new inherited medical syndrome involving early greying, hearing loss and essential tremor, which has not yet been named. Doctor Karmody was an internationally known otolaryngologist who was noted for his research interests in the pathophysiology of Otitis Media, congenital abnormalities of the head and neck, and the histopathology of deafness. He authored the Textbook of Otolaryngology and over 140 scientific papers.

Collin will be greatly missed by family and friends. Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday from 5:30-7PM at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich followed by a Time of Remembrance at 7PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Collingwood S Karmody MD may be made to McCarthy Care Center, 73 Service Rd., East Sandwich, MA 02537.
