Obituary

Conal Furay, longtime professor at Webster University, died Monday November 12, 2012. He was 85 and lived in Creve Coeur. Dr. Furay, a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and the Korean War, was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. After getting a PhD at St. Louis University, he taught at Fontbonne University in the 1960s before moving to Webster University, where he taught for over 35 years in the history department and published three books on history, including two workbooks with Michael J. Conal Furay, longtime professor at Webster University, died Monday November 12, 2012. He was 85 and lived in Creve Coeur.

Dr. Furay, a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and the Korean War, was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. After getting a PhD at St. Louis University, he taught at Fontbonne University in the 1960s before moving to Webster University, where he taught for over 35 years in the history department and published three books on history, including two workbooks with Michael J. Salevouris, currently of Webster University.

A lifelong enthusiast of horse racing, Furay also spent 30 summers working at AK-SAR-BEN racetrack in Omaha, Nebraska. He was well known for his eccentric humor, passion for American history and Nebraska football, and large family of nine children.

He will be waked at Gerber Chapel, 23 West Lockwood, Webster Groves, on Thursday, November 15 from 4-8 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, November 16 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish, 17 Joy Avenue, Webster Groves. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Affton. The Furay family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart, 619 North Second Street, St. Charles MO 63301, or the St. Louis chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association, Campus Box 8111, 660 South Euclid Avenue, St. Louis MO 63110.

Dr. Furay was predeceased by his daughter Clare Furay. Among his survivors are his wife, Jean Purcell Furay of Creve Coeur; three sisters: Mary Furay Lindsay of Omaha, Sr. Sally Furay (RSCJ) of San Diego, and Elizabeth Furay Winters of San Diego; twelve grandchildren; his son, Guy V. Furay of Greenville, South Carolina; and seven daughters: Alice Visser-Furay of England, Ann Furay Poelzl of Oakville, Mary Furay of Maryland Heights, Elizabeth Furay Bundt of Seattle, Suzanne Furay of St. Louis, Julia Furay of Brooklyn, and Carolyn Furay of the world.
