Connie Pernicone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2017.

Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smile, I've only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand, in your hearts, I've only gone to rest a little while. As long as I have the love of each of you, I can live my life in the hearts of all of you.

Donna Fleming

There is so much sorrow at the passing of Aunt Connie, and yet enormous relief that she is no longer suffering. Alzheimer's compounded by deafness, and then acute rheumatoid arthritis made her final days very difficult and painful.

From when she was very young, Aunt Connie was a prankster, always joking and having fun... sometimes devilish fun, but never hurtful; even teaching us how to cheat at cards. She was so good to all her nieces and nephews as we were growing up . She would help my Mom make clothes for us and even cut and permed our hair. She worked just across from Alexander's in the Bronx, and often came home with clothes for us to try on. She took care of our very special grandmother for many years, and when we moved to Mahopac, she'd come up to visit on Sundays with the most delicious 238th St. Italian bread and pastries. Anytime she came to visit was a party for us.

Once when I was at the nursing home, she asked one of the nurses to sing to her. To my astonishment, the nurse began singing, and Aunt Connie smiled that special smile of hers and bobbed her head to the music. Sometimes, she would just break out in "You Are My Sunshine". She loved her ice cream, cake, sun at the beach, playing cards, lots of black pepper on her steak, and of course, pasta, pasta, and pasta! With all her disability, she remained fiercely independent to the end, always making her wishes known. That Aunt Connie holds a special place in my heart and will be sorely missed goes without saying.

Aunt Connie, I wish you a beautiful journey to the other side where you will be free of pain and feel the love of your God as well as be reunited with your parents, brothers and sisters, and other loved ones who have gone before you.

With much love from your niece,
Donna
