BEAUSANG, Cornelius W., physicist and professor at the University of Richmond, and a resident of Midlothian, Virginia, died on June 3, 2017, after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends during his last days. Dr. Beausang was born and educated in Cork, Ireland, and received his doctorate at SUNY Stony Brook. He was a physics professor at Yale University for eight years. Since 2004, he has taught at the University of Richmond. He became a U.S. citizen in 2010. Friends remember him as a skilled and avid sailor. Dr. Beausang was predeceased by his brother, Sean; and is survived by his wife, Cindy; and his sisters, Siobhan and Aine. His great mind, good cheer, and great Irish wit, will be missed by his colleagues, friends and students. To honor Con's devotion to his students, the University of Richmond is establishing a fund in his memory to support physics students. Donations can be made to the University of Richmond and designated for the Beausang Memorial Fund. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, Va. 23113. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 9, in Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond. An on-campus reception will follow.

Thank you, family, friends and colleagues, for sharing your wonderful memories about Con.
They are helping me remember the wonderful life we shared together and are giving me strength through this difficult time. Many of you have asked about contributing to the memorial fund that the University of Richmond has set up in his honor. Here is the link should any of you wish to do so. http://giving.richmond.edu/
Thank you for all your king thoughts,
With gratitude,
Cynthia Beausang

I knew Con professionally and will miss his intellect, humor, and kindness -- especially his kindness toward students.
May their memories of Con bring comfort to Cindy and other members of Con's family.

I was saddened to learn of Con's passing away, having heard of his long fight with cancer. I have many fond memories of conversations with Con, about physics and other things, was well as of the generous hospitality that he and Cindy offered to University of Richmond students, along with me, in their home. I will miss his contagious spirit.

Con opened a world and a country to me, and very quickly became a dear friend. As with Liz, he introduced me to the world of nuclear physics. The confidence, trust, respect, warmth and commitment that he had for all of his students meant so much. You could do no better than to have Con on your side. As a person Con welcomed me to his adopted country, and his home. Con's positive spirit and sense of humour were amazing and I miss him greatly. Cindy, with warmest wishes and love, my thoughts are with you.
Memories have been coming all week of good times with you both: 25 MeV protons to Cave 4C for Beausang, Peet's Coffee, writing together in Stradas, sitting on the 88 roof, thanksgiving dinners, sailing in the bay, Can Can, picking us from the hospital after a car crash and then feeding us pancakes, D-Hall lunches, his absolutely massive monitor, summers in Connecticut, steak and physics deep in the heart of Texas, meeting bears in New Mexico, and of course his undivided love for Cindy and the animals. Con always pushed me to be my best. Keep on surging Con

Con was a wonderful physicist and a great friend to me and to many others. I will miss him dearly. I greatly admired his intelligence, ingenuity, wit, and joy for life. He was a wonderful colleague to me and many others in our field of nuclear physics. It is terrible that he is gone now, as he brought much joy and inspiration to the lives of so many of us. His life has ended, but our memory of and fondness for Con will continue unabated. I send wishes of love and strength to Cindy as she goes through this difficult process of recovery. I had to make this journey two years ago, and so I know how long the recovery takes. Best wishes to Cindy.

I am greatly saddened by Con's death. He was a wonderful physicist and a wonderful friend, a friend to me and to many in the field. I loved his knowledge and his spirit and his joy for life. Now his life is done, but we will recall his work and all he contributed to us. I will miss him greatly. And, I wish Cindy love and strength as she goes through this terrible process of recovery.

Beautiful persons, like Con, are rare, and their loss can be particularly sad. Con was blessed with a marvelous wit, a great intellect, innate curiosity, and a personality for the ages. He could/would discuss anything from the definition of 'nothing,' to the wonders of flying a drone. Cindy, his family, his many friends and privileged students have lost a marvelous friend.

Con was a beautiful person and a very clever colleague. We first met in the old time in Daresbury in the U.K. for the launch of the Eurogam collaboration.I will remember him as a truly friend. I miss you already Con. Farewell sailor.

I have many fond memories of Con, starting from the warm welcome he gave me when I came to WNSL. I remember many experiments, SASSYER, summer students, lots of sailing, ping-pong, and softball. It was so much fun to work with Con, and he still influences the way I work with students every day. I very much appreciated that he had always time to help and would listen to any problem. I will miss discussing with him and, of course, his humor. Con, you will be missed.
Cindy, you have my deepest condolences.

Con was a great friend and just some person that made this a better place to be in. He loved to hear my stories of the lesser told stories of American history. This land needs more like him to shine out the darkness. I'll eat a plate of chips and Chinese food in his honor.

Con was truly unique and spectacularly beautiful. An eternally curious and brilliant scientist who cared about his students like no other. Every interaction with him was fun, insightful and never never dull! His mischievous smile with that naughty twinkle in his eye will be remembered and cherished forever. He would want us all to remember the "good times" spent with him (which was every time!) and the fantastic adventures, whether it be physics, boating or any activity where we were lucky enough to share space and time with him. We all simply loved and adored this amazingly awesome human being..... as we do you too Cindy!

With shock and deep sadness we had learned from the passing away of our dear colleague, Con Beausang.
Both of us have had the pleasure to scientifically collaborate with Con in our times at Yale University. Con has made a great impact on our scientific developments and most of all was a great deal of fun to work with.
We will always commemorate Con as a brilliant nuclear scientist and a cheerful person in the lab, on the ocean, and on the softball fields.
Our thoughts and sympathies are with Cindy in this moment.

Con was our great mate, companion on many a scientific journey, inspirational teacher and mentor, dear friend, funny beyond all reason and with a massive heart. We are heartbroken for your loss Cindy. What a great and positive life he led; one of his many legacies is the multitude of students he inspired and enthused from Liverpool, Yale, Surrey and Richmond; with Prof. B, Physics was always fun :) We loved him.

Con was probably the reason I ended up in nuclear physics. He was my first supervisor at WNSL, back when I was an undergraduate who knew absolutely nothing. I have very fond memories of him going through the lab at around 4 pm, asking everyone if they wanted to go sailing on the weekend--a gesture that was part of what made WNSL feel like home to me. I also remember hearing him raise his hand after nearly every talk we both attended, with his characteristic "Can I ask a stupid question?". It made me think that I, too, could take a chance and ask a stupid question, and was one of the many ways Con made physics approachable and fun. I am so sorry for your loss, Cindy; Con will be greatly missed.

Con will be missed by us and by so many more. His zest for life, his engagement with others, and his caring personality were so emblematic and so contagious. We knew him very well for two decades both as a colleague and a dear friend. Sailing and science are the poorer for his very premature passing as are we all. Our hearts go out to Cindy and the creatures. Love, Rick and Jo Ann Casten

Con and I were good friends through High School and College in Cork. I have the best of memories of the times we toured the Cork and Kerry countryside on our bicycles and the many hikes at his beloved Gougane Barra. I was fortunate to be back in Ireland at the time of his wedding and to meet Cindy and her family. My heart goes out to Cindy and to the many friends he made over the years, in the US, in Ireland and around the world.
