Cynthia Colangelo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2013.

Cynthia Louise Welsh Colangelo passed away at the age of 55 on August 27th after a long and courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Cindy, also known as CC, was born on November 17, 1957 and was raised in Miami, Florida by John Robert and Mary Welsh. She was the beloved granddaughter of John and Lavinia Allen, late of Miami, Florida. Cindy was a proud graduate of the University of Florida and so, naturally, a rabid Gator fan.
Cindy moved to Carrollton, Texas in 1986 where she resided with her husband Joseph Colangelo and two sons, Jesse Welsh DeAnda and Anthony Colangelo until her death this week. Along with her parents, Cindy leaves five siblings: Anne Marie (Larry Johnson), Barbara Jean (Richard Wilson), Debra Ann (Victor Platt), Ellen Lavinia (Andrew Elam) and brother Francis Allen along with a number of dear nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Cindy was the glue that held the family together with her jokes, cards, silly faces and we can't forget her parties. She was sweet, driven, mischievous, passionate, spiritual, loving, a great friend, beautiful sister, sweet aunt, loving wife and mother. And for a tiny woman, Cindy was larger than life. She had a huge heart.
Cindy is well-known for her far-reaching community service efforts. After working in the corporate world for many years, Cindy returned full-time to her passion for helping other people. She served on the board and as director of a number of local non-profit organizations. Through her consulting firm, CLC Consulting, Cindy was an advocate for the education and development of our nation's youth, served as a certified Ombudsman for local senior citizens, coordinated numerous fundraising events and most recently devoted much of her energy to advocacy for those with breast cancer. Through her efforts as a speaker with the Susan G. Komen Speakers Bureau, Cindy became an accomplished speaker whose presentations always left her audience deeply moved.
For the past 10 years or so Cindy has battled breast cancer in many forms. Once one form of the cancer was knocked down through treatment another popped up. Cindy has been an inspiration to many, whether through her battle with cancer, her leadership at church, or her work with local non-profits. During the last several years of her life, Cindy documented her progress and trials through her posts to www.caringbridge.org. These posts provide a deep insight into the life of a very special woman dealing with a terminal disease.
Through Cindy's advocacy for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, she inspired many to join her in her numerous fundraising and awareness efforts. Through CC's Sisters, Cindy brought together friends and family alike to join in Susan G. Komen's 3-Day Walk for the past three years raising money for research. The team is again gearing up for the walk again in November in Dallas.
Thanks go out to the staff at UT Southwestern Simmons Cancer Center and all the special nurses of Faith Presbyterian Hospice who helped us care for Cindy through these past few years. We could not have done it without them; their advice and strength helped get us through the rough patches. Their care and love will forever be in our hearts…
It was Cindy's wish that in lieu of sending flowers, her friends honor her memory by sending donations to one of her favorite charities in her name.

I had gotten to know Cindy over the past year while discussing a book about her family's history. She was very proud of her family and spoke highly of each of them. She also spoke of their closeness. I have no doubt Cindy will be missed by many. Rest in peace dear.

I was fortunate to have met Cindy many years ago in Jacksonville, Florida where I was lucky to have hired her to be my customer service manager. I don't remember her having any real experience in customer service, but her shiny, perky personality immediately won me over. To my pleasant surprise she performed her job with the same sunny positive perspective and with great results. As we worked together and I got to know her better, I was amazed at her consistently happy, kind and gracious manner. She was a true lady in every way. But don't ever mistake her affable persona for emptiness. She was sharp as a tack and quick as a whip. Her ever-present wry, dry sense of humor was one of her best weapons to disarm the toughest situation or person. She once adamantly tried to convince me that the new Taco Bell in town was the best Mexican food restaurant in Jacksonville while doing her best to keep a straight face.
My life was definitely made better by knowing her bright and cheerful smile and her light and joyful laugh. She's gone way too soon. Go Gators!

I worked with Cindy @ The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind and have been a friend of Cindy's for many years. She was the perfect example of a servent leader. She cared more and tried harder than most. When I heard she had passed away I called her cell phone to hear her recorded voice one more time. I will miss you Cindy. I will pray for your entire family.

I went to South Miami Senior High School with Cindy (Class of 1975), and hadn't seen her since graduation. I was made aware of her battle with cancer through another classmate of ours, and was sending my prayers to Cindy. It's very sad that she had to endure this battle and ultimately had to leave her family behind, but there is peace in knowing that after we pass from this life there is bliss in the beyond. I have had experiences in my life that have led me to this truth, and can say with all my heart that she is happy, joyous, and free. Peace and love to Cindy and her family.

Cindy had a way of saying "Uncle Johnny" that made made me really feel she meant it with all sincerity. Everyone knows how much fun she was. She really spiced things up at Mandy & Phils wedding with her Jello shots and gettig what she wanted out of the bartender. She was the spark of every function she attened. She will be missed by us all.
Heaven will never be the same now that she has joined Nana & Poppie and all her friends.

Cindy was the type of woman who brightened everyone's lives who had the pleasure to meet and talk with her.
She is one of those people who genuinely cares for others--such a big heart with so much love and kindness so freely given.
Heaven gained an incredibly strong, influential, caring and beautiful angel, and I can't wait to see you again someday, Cindy.
I know you're watching down on us and smiling, because that's what you do. Your contagious smile made everyone around you smile and brightened the lives of many.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. Cindy was always the life of the party and kept everyone laughing. Uncle Red and I always called her our "wild and crazy" niece. I know he was waiting with all the other angels to greet you when you arrived in heaven. As you told me a few weeks ago, when you knew you would be joining him, you two have a lot of catching up to do. We know you are in a better place, laughing, singing and dancing in your "tutu", but we will miss that beautiful smiling face. Luv you Kiddo, Aunt Bea

I am a richer person for having known Cindy. We helped each other navigate the road of this terrible disease. I tried to let her know what to expect, how to be prepared, etc....that is what those of us who have traveled the road before you try to do....the ironic thing is that she led me on many occasions.....I only hope that I can always be as brave and as strong as she was....
