She was born in Stamford, Connecticut, attended Low-Heywood School (now King-Low-Heywood-Thomas), the College of William and Mary and the Yale School of Drama.

Cindy moved to Williamsburg in 1955, before the advent of dial telephones. She was a woman of diverse interests and talents that include the theatre, gardening, photography and genealogy. She was a volunteer member of the Williamsburg Fire Department.

She leaves behind her daughter Virginia Stewart and her husband Michael of Richmond, her daughter Paula Hitchens of Williamsburg, her grandson Alexander Hitchens and his wife Stephanie of Jacksonville, Florida, her son Hugh Hitchens, his wife Sheila and their daughter Grace of San Anselmo, California, and her sister-in-law Mamie Ruth Hitchens Blanton and her husband Bill of Williamsburg. Her extended family includes many longtime friends in the community.

Cindy's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of New Century Hospice; specifically Earldean, Amy, Amanda, Deborah and Don for their kindness, compassion and the loving care they provided.

In keeping with Cindy's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, baked goods or casseroles, please honor Cindy's memory and her love of animals and children and donate generously to the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Road, Richmond, VA 23220 and to Bright Blessings 1150 Crews Road, Suite C, Matthews, NC 28705.

She was truly a Renaissance woman.

Arrangements under the direction of Nelsen Williamsburg, Williamsburg, VA.
