Dale was born on November 25, 1934 to Frances and Ordina (Kueling) Pope, in Tulalip, Washington, and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, with Marion by his side, on November 25, 2012, his 78th birthday.
Dale attended Everett Schools, and entered the US Army on August 4, 1953. He was part of the German Occupation forces. He rose to Staff Sergeant at 18 years old. He served in the Combat Engineers building roads and bridges and was in charge of building a Bailey pontoon Bridge across the Rhine River, in the event it was necessary to evacuate US troops across the river. The bridge remains to this day as part of the German War Museum, outside the Karlsruhe, Germany. Dale returned to Everett in 1958 and worked for the Boeing Company making templates for the 707. He also worked at various sawmills, then joined the Everett Police reserves, with the intention of becoming a full time police officer. He joined the Everett Police Department full time on January 2, 1960, working in every division except narcotics. He was the department's public relations officer, crime prevention specialist, and the department's fingerprint expert.
In his crime prevention role, he put together a self-protection program for women and he spoke to numerous women's groups throughout Snohomish County. He attended the National Crime Prevention Institute at the University of Louisville, and while attending there, he also taught self protection for women to police officers from across the US. Dale started the Chaplains Bureau for the Everett Police Department and instigated several other programs for home and business security.
After a heart attack in 1977, Pope retired from the police department and later ran for Everett City Council. He remained on the city council until 2003. He was Council President five times and Budget Chairman 12 times.
Dale was active in his church, Grace Lutheran in Everett, serving as Vice President and President of the church council.
He was married to Marion (Hoff); and the father of Robert and Bill Pope; step-father, to Kevin Potter; all of the Everett area and grandfather to, Joshua Pope, of Carson City, NV.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frances Earnest Pope; mother, Ordina Helena (Kueling) Pope; his brother, Clyde; and sisters, Helena Wraspir and Stahr Allene Pope.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; his sons, Robert, Bill, and Kevin; and grandson, Joshua; and nephews and nieces.
Funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 8401 Holly Drive, Everett, on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 11 a.m..
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Providence General Hospital Foundation, in memory of Dale.
Special thanks to the Doctors, Hospitalists, R.N.s, CNA's and Hospice staff at Providence Regional Medical Center, Everett Paramedics and Fire Fighters, and Everett Police Honor Guard. City of Everett employees and all his many friends.
Rest in Peace, Dale. You will be missed beyond words.
You will never be forgotten, for although we are apart, you will always and forever be alive within my heart.
2 Timothy 4:7-8
I have fought the good fight,
I have finished the race, I have kept the faith
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Dale was one of the good guys. I enjoyed working with him getting to know his sense of humour which got him into trouble and me, if I happened to be with him. I will always remember him fondly. I am truly sorry for your loss Marion, I know you and Dale had a long and loving marriage. In deepest sympathy and respect, Pam Dixon.

From the regular visits to the KQTY building on Rockafeller, next to the jail, to the staff events and work parties at KWYZ with Marion & Dale, it was always a pleasure to see his smiling face across the table. In his role as Capt. Salty I remember broadcasting the parade & leaning into Salty's convertible as it rolled over my foot. No pain, no gain. The Lord is getting a great organizer, use him well.

Dear Marion, Bob & Bill & Family,
I grew up withthe Pope boy's and Dale was just like a Father to us all, he was alway's so funny but strict. But he'd alway's take the time to talk with us kids:-) Last time we talked was at the Council Meetings, I would go to listen to him & my best friend Ron Gipson. Dale would alway's stop & talk & catch up with me when the meetings were over. He was so true to Everett, he loved being Caption Salty!! I'm feeling so sad to know I won't be seeing him until later on in life, until we meet again in Heaven. But we'll have alot to share by then!! I will keep all of you in my prayers, stay strong for each other. I will miss you big guy. Love you forever.

Dear Pope family,
I met Mr. Pope under unusual circumstances. I have always remembered his kindness through the years when I would see him or read about him. In 1965, while still in high school, I worked during the summer months for the Snoh. County Treasurer's office. I parked my car on a street with an incline about three blocks away. One morning I got out of the car and forgot to put it in park. It rolled down the hill and hit Mr. Pope's car. I left him a note on his windshield not knowing who he was. He contacted me and couldn't have been more awesome. I gave him the necessary information so he could get his car fixed. He told me not to worry about it. Those things happened. I saw him through the years and he always remembered me. My wish is for fond memories bringing you comfort during this difficult time. Joan Pugsley

Dale had more common sense in his little finger than most people had in their whole persona. He was also a great prankster and added joy to a sometimes somber job. He will be missed by the many lives he touched.

Marion and family,
I'm sorry to hear of Dale's passing. Dale joined EPD at about the same time that I joined EFD. Between his Police activity and his City government duties I came to know him as a true gentleman. I had also worked with him in the Boeing template shop. I'm sure that his experience there taught him the attention to detail that showed in his woodworking hobby. He will be missed.
To Captain Salty, may you enjoy fair winds and following seas on your new journey.

Dale was the best PIO and Crime Prevention Specialist in Snohomish County. Holding the same positions in Edmonds, we worked together on many Crime prevention efforts and I highly respected Dale and his quick ability to create new ideas. Our paths crossed many times over the years and I will miss him. Everett should feel diminished.

I will never forget when Mr. Pope took time out of his busy schedule to be my guest speaker in our high school Current World Affairs class. It was for my report on criminal rehabilitation. What an impression he made. You could have heard a pin drop in the room the students were so enthralled (and of course I received an A). He was such a gracious and kind person. My prayers are with the family members and friends he left behind. I am looking forward to seeing him again someday.

Marian: I was very sorry to see that Dale had passed away. I was the hygienist that both you and Dale saw at Crow Family Dentistry. On that note, I will remember Dale from our varied conversations, many of which centered around his unique ways to prepare Spam. In fact, once he brought me a Spam sandwich, which became another topic of conversation and always much laughter. He was always a bright light in my work day and will be sorry missed by all of those he knew. Mary
