Danette Baldwin

My name is Danette, I'm Daniel's sister. My brother was much loved. Daniel was the person to turn to when there was a crisis. He flew to the Philippines and arranged all of the transportation and escorted our ailing brother from the Philippines to Denver when no one else could. He showed his strength and shined his brightest at a time when everybody else was overwhelmed on several occasions. He loved his family and he was devoted to his family members. He valued family over everything, even when there were times that were difficult. Daniel was a very strong man with a very sensitive side. He had two careers and maintained two jobs throughout his working life. He had multiple talents. He could show compassion and service towards others which he derived from his career as a flight attendant. He could make you feel special and cared for which he also did as a brother. He also had a stern side and a very disciplined side that he gained from his job in the prison system. He demonstrated those skills quite effectively, when he was doing problem-solving in a crisis. My brother was a very accomplished, devoted, strong, sensitive and loving man who will be deeply missed by all of his family and loved ones.

Fred Nelson

My name is Fred Nelson. I live in San Francisco, Ca. I was blessed to know Dan from when he was a flight attendant. I was playing college football & was going through it with a bunch of racists coaches. He took me under his wings and became a big brother to me (even though I was 6'2 & weighed 290lbs)!

Through his mentoring I went on, graduated & played some professional football. He introduced me to his family and always looked out for me with fantastic advice. He never allowed me to "be soft".

On his trips to Cali we had to eat real Chinese food from Chinatown & he ordered in Chinese!!! We also lifted weights & ran. He always joked that "the weightroom is yours but the running is mine!"

When I came to DC, he & Wanda treated me like family.

I dont have any biological brothers & sisters but Daniel was my big brother. My heart is estatic that he has gone on to Glory with our Father but its sad too knowing my big brother is no longer here.

Garland Makel

My name is Garland Makel, I knew Dan more than 20 year. He was one of my good friends. He will be missed by me and my wife.

April 4, 2015

My name is Danita Boyd, I was named as was my twin, Danette after our brother Daniel, who was named after our Uncle Daniel.
Our names are the way we show honor and trace lineage in our family. My daughter's nickname is named after his daughter's nickname, because I thought she was so cute. And as I watched Daniel comb Chickie's hair or try to feed her I could see the father's love he had for his children and that impressed me greatly.

My brother was assigned care and responsibility of his younger sibling twins. The duty was great and therefore split between Daniel and Lowry.

I am Daniel's twin. I've never forgotten that and he reminded me frequently.

I learned from my brother the love of sports, music and how to be strong despite teasing..most importantly, I learned how" to stop crying all the time like a girl".

These gifts would serve me greater in life. I learned important lessons from a Black man's perspective which would help me improve my understanding of my children especially my son.

Though we were separated in distance we know we had a genuine and enduring love for each other as evidenced in the above family naming patterns. I miss my brother dearly and remain Daniel's twin and namesake.

Danita (Nita)

Love always,

Danita, James and Eryka Boyd
