Daniel Anderson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2012.

Daniel J. Anderson, Sr.

Daniel John Anderson, Sr. was born October 1, 1923 at 1:30AM in Portland, Oregon to Olga Alice Altman and George Willie Anderson. The youngest of three boys, Miles being the oldest and George the middle son. From the age of less than one year through the years of the Great Depression Dan grew up on a 40 acre farm nestled in the rolling hills and valleys of Llagas, California located on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains just outside the community of Morgan Hill, California.
His parents had married in1916. Fortunately, when his family, moved from Oregon to Llagas in 1924, his mother's brother, Herman, paid cash for the forty acres and gave the place to Olga for taking care of him until his death. Consequently, there were no mortgage payments to make, so the family had 40 acres free and clear during the depression and afterwards. At that time, the family consisted of father (George – 44 years), mother (Olga – 38 years), half-brother (Miles – 17 years), brother (George – 6 years) and Dan (under 1 year old). The acreage was on McKeene/Uvas Roads (at the point where the road name changed) and where Casa Loma Road formed an intersection with the family's road. The land was farm ground and was surrounded by private land and a big cattle ranch, with mostly low hills around the acreage. They also had a Model-T Ford, which allowed the family transportation for the nine mile drive to town – to church, etc.

Good evening, Aunt Shirley,
I hope that you did not feel left out when I just e-mailed the children. I had planned to send you another note the following day, but life here intervened. Mostly had to write 2 articles for our monthly church newsletter (I'm slow at it), prepare for removal of 3 huge cedar trees that had so invaded the garden and totally blocked out view and take care of Presbyterian Women finances in preparation of passing the books on to the next treasurer.
Thank you for taking your precious time to send the e-mail addresses and share what you are trying to put together for the Memorial Book. I had printed out several copies of the obituary on the Thursday before we came up. I know that Russell based his talk on the printed obituary, but added a number of stories as he went along, which made it so special and personal. It was so beautiful and meaningful the way all the children participated - not easy, but their sharing helped to appreciate and understand our Dan's life - his joys and his traumas. The more I read about the ravages of war on our veterans, the more painful it is to know how he suffered from it in so many ways. And - those he loved suffered along with him. You especially have been one of those long-suffering ones who administered loving-kindness through it all.
I'm glad to hear that you are not pushing yourself, but doing what you can when you feel like it. Now is the time to take care of yourself. I for one can wait. So, please, don't rush to try to get any requests off to me/us. Yes, I have seen the pictures attached to the mortuary's obituary and they are fun to see. I particularly loved seeing the one of you, Dan and Elizabeth and printed it out. Was it from your wedding or the sealing? The thoughts expressed by Loren regarding sealing as a family were touching. I realize that it is a part of your belief (which we don't have), but I think it is very meaningful and love the thought of it.
Well, for me, it is back to updating data on Quicken for the new treasurer. I have at least learned some of the mechanics of the program, but how it works - I haven't a clue!
How I appreciate the blessed 34 years you gave our Dan. Ever so much love to you, Gwen

Our trip to Redding, Salem and Anacordes was wonderful. A funeral is a heck of a reason for a road trip, but it was enjoyable just the same. I especially enjoyed dad's service, being together as a family, and taking a nice long dip in Cow Creek with several other members of the Anderson Clan.

I hope you are doing well emotionally and physically. I know you are doing well spiritually and that has a positive impact on all other aspects of life.

As dad's eternal partner, you are an integral part of our eternal family and my life. Marilyn and I love you dearly and appreciate everything you have done to unify our combined family. When people ask about my parents' divorce and my relationship with you, I tell them that it is a story of two families that have melded into one. You may not be my mom, but you are my dad's eternal companion, as well as step-grandmother to our children and grandchildren. I love you as much as any other family member, but it would be best described as a brother and friend. After all, we share the same spiritual DNA.

Warm Regards,
Ray

To Shirley, , Loren, Ray, Russ, Danny, Elizabeth

To my dear cousins - Loren,Ray,and Russell, Dan, Jr. and Elizabeth,
I hardly know how to thank you and your families for the experience of a lifetime last week end. There is no way to express the incredible love and acceptance that Don and I felt in your presence. It was just overwhelming and still brings tears to my eyes.
And - the service honoring my Uncle Danny, your Dad, was beautiful and uplifting from beginning to end. Thank you, especially, for sharing the significance and meaning of some of your practices/ordinances. What each one of you shared during the service touched our hearts and testified to the impact Dan had on your lives, particularly in regard to character, spiritual life and endeavor to following the Lord's ways and teaching.
And - in addition, it was so heartwarming to see and feel the unity and fun times you have together. What a gift and way to honor our Dan!
Continuing peace and blessings to all of you.... with love from Gwen and Don.

May 22, 2012

Hi, Shirley.
Thank you for sharing the link to Dan's obituary. Russell wrote a very nice tribute to his dad. I'm glad that the service went well and that so many were able to attend.
Tomorrow is your first day of new "normalcy" as you said. I am praying that the peace that you received remains and will sustain you.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Love, Janet

May 22, 2012

Greetings, Shirley,
I just tried to call you a couple times and your phone just hung up so I decided I would try to reach you this way.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Uncle Dan. After so many years of your caring for him, I'm sure you must feel it more than anyone else. You have been so faithful to take care of him through thick and thin and I want you to know how much I appreciate it. We have been trying for a couple years to get up to see you and him and it seems it never worked out. I did love him and realize that generation in both sides of my family is just about gone and it leaves a big hole!
Unfortunately we won't be able to come up this weekend for his service. I've been trying to complete a dress for our oldest granddaughter, Brie, for a musical she is in which I would have to complete before we could come up. I am just about done, but can't pull of doing everything else that needs to be done in order to leave in the morning.
So please give everyone my condolences. I had hoped to see all my cousins and am disappointed I can't do that.
Hopefully we will have another opportunity to connect one of these days.
Take care - we have been and are praying for all of you.
Love, Judy (and Bud)

May 22, 2012

Good morning, Aunt Shirley.....
Thank you so much for you kind words, the detail regarding the arrangements and making us feel so welcome. You have blessed my heart by your message. I, too, am aware of the first inner peace - largely from knowing that our loved one is no longer in pain from illness or suffering from the ravages of Alzheimer's or dementia. I (and our church and friends, too) am praying for you and the family. Give Russell my heartfelt gratitude for stepping in with arrangements making it easier for you and making them so meaningful for those of us who have lived at a distance.
This has been one of those times that I have been telling myself "remember, I am from the other line of the Andersons - of another persuation of the Christian faith and don't want to barge in." That being said - have I ever experienced that from any of you? Absolutely, not!

Know that you are being held close to my heart.
With love, Gwen

May 22, 2012

Hi Shirley,
You definitely have the love and support of the entire family. Janet and I are coming up, probably June 5th through June 7th. I am looking into available flights and will let you know when our plans have been finalized. It will be so good to see you.
There will definitely be challenges ahead. A different kind of grief, as you mentioned, and that will be a journey. At some point, there will also be opportunities and other things you could not see while caring for Dan. I know he will live in your heart forever.
I know you feel privileged and blessed that you got to care for Dan for all of the time he needed you. I know he felt completely loved and I know he completely loved you. That is truly a gift.
Love, Susan

Poem....

Happy little memories ,go flitting through my mind
And in all my thoughts and memories, I always seem to find
The picture of your face, dear, the memory of your touch,
And all the other little things, I've come to love so much.
You cannot go beyond my thoughts or leave my love behind,
Because I keep you in my heart and forever on my mind.
And though I may not have told you, I think you know it's true,
That I find daily happiness in the very thought of you.
Love, Don and Emily

May 22, 2012

Hi, Shirley. I e-mailed Donald and Emily of Dan's passing and she wants to assure you of their thoughts and prayers. She said she met Dan just once at Judy's and Jerry's house.I believe Judy had a bar-b-que after another birthday bash and that she and Dan had hit it off very well. I thought you would want to know how many of us share your feelings at this time. I didn't want to phone you soon because I thought you probably have had a lot of calls, but you know I have been with you all this time. Take good care of yourself. Love, Mom.

May 22, 2012

Dear Shirley,

My heart is with you.

May 22, 2012

Hi, Shirley. I just talked to Susan and she told me the sad news. I said prayers for Dan that he is at last safe and free from all the pain, anxieties, etc. that he has endured for so long. Then I prayed for you to be given the strength to make this transition. I know it will be very difficult but be happy for him, too that he is at last free from all the trials and tribulations exasperated by the dementia. Know that I am with you and be assured of my love for you. Love, Mom

Oh . . . you know that our hearts go out to you and your family. . . such a very tender time. I am glad to hear that you will have so many Andersons as well as Danny, Liz, and Denise so close by. If the service will be on the 19th, we won't be able to attend. But our interest is in being with you and it sounds like there will be so many … and that there really will be some lovely moments for you. We would, however, like to come up after everyone is gone. Do let us know if we can bring our trailer and camp out and visit with you for a couple of days.
Love,
Kathy (and Peter)

May 22, 2012

Hello Shirley,
We received the latest email you forwarded to your Mom and Janet and appreciate the ongoing information. It is comforting to us to know that Dan is being kept so comfortable in his own home with you and some of his children very close by and how beautiful is that. While as you said in your email, you are not the first person in this situation, it is a new and challenging experience and I am glad to see that you have such wonderful support as you move through each day. You have done so much to make Dan's passage a peaceful time, no matter how much time goes by.
As far as being prepared, from my experience as a hospice nurse many many years ago along with the passing of my parents . . . whether it is sudden or lingers, losing someone is a powerful experienceand it should be. I always have found it comforting to honor their lives and cherish those memories. We love Dan and think of him every day . . . the wonderful man he is, the children he influenced, as well as those great times shared up at your house and the Shingletown property.
We love you, too and hope you have a peaceful day today.
Love,
Kathy (and Peter)

Dear Grandma,
I just wanted to drop you a quick line. I went and visited my dad last night and he told me about the sweet experience you had with Grandpa and how he slipped away. We shared a lot back and forth and I can't think of a better way to go than snuggled up to the one you love most. You are an extremely special lady and I am eternally grateful to you and thank you for being a part of our family and for the way you always took such good care of grandpa. I am looking forward to seeing you soon and want you to know you are in our prayers.
Lots of love,
Mike & Katie Anderson

May 22, 2012

Gwen,

Thank you so much for you kind and thoughtful words. You are spot on regarding the eternal impact dad had on our family by leading a Christ-centered life rather a "mammon-centered" life. The joy and peace this has provided us are worth far more than all the boats, fine furnishings, or exotic vacations some parents provide their families. We knew we were loved by both our earthly parents and Heavenly Parents. That is a treasure beyond measure.

Dad wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but he was always willing to keep moving forward in faith. He certainly provided us a good example of "enduring to the end."

Luv,
Ray (on behalf of all of us)
